Novitiate is a tidy little story. It’s fictitious of course, but it fits the oral histories I’ve read about the period. It also delves into the problems of the time, with physical penance, cloisterestration, and other issues. This an excellent exploration of the changes that Vatican II wrought. Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee is trying to do a lot of things. It is a powerful interpretation of the American Indian assimilation policy, but it has its problems. This was a difficult movie to review, because I’m a Western historian, and I know just how sensitive a topic this is. I was excited to watch this movie. To prepare for it, I listened to an audiobook of the thing it was based on. That was a memoire, and the person reading the book for the audiobook was the actual author. He even has some jabs and asides that I’m pretty sure weren’t in the actual book. Today, I’m going to talk about some actual American conspiracies, and how they were found out. You’ll notice that none of them were thwarted by conspiracists. None were found out by conspiracists. And none were proven by conspiracists. That is not how investigation works, because you can’t investigate something while denying what you are investigating. So let’s look at the reality of conspiracies in the US, and prove that conspiracy theorists have done nothing but harm to the world. First Man is enigmatic and procedural, rather than bombastic and triumphal, which may have scared some moviegoers and critics. It tackles tougher questions than any previous film, and does so with all the ambiguity it can muster, so I get why it wasn’t a huge success. But ambiguity is desperately needed in Hollywood, especially with over-glorified history such as this. I was simply happy that Vice wasn’t as bad as I expected, but it remains the worst of 2018 thus far. Some folks are fine with anything being said in the service of going after Dick Cheney, but I am certainly not that vindictive of him or anyone. Lies are lies, no matter who you are telling them about. But much like my Death of Stalin review, if I’m busting myths about a someone generally think is a bad guy, which to be clear is a dumb way of viewing history, then I’m going to be labelled as defending the man. Just you wait, people are going to be that kind of stupid about this. The funny thing is this movie could’ve easily avoided these problems if it wasn’t so vindictive to begin with, but I can understand how difficult it is to talk about Cheney’s vice-presidency. There is one lesson we can learn from the history of walls, from past to the present, which is quite clear. Society has changed tremendously because of walls, but that one thing remains the same. From Han advisers in the 2nd century AD, to generals during WWII, we can find that sentiment repeated: A wall is only as good as its defenders. Those defenders have changed over time. Eventually the border wall became obsolete, as inventions from within those walls destroyed their effectiveness and overruled the one fear those walls were built to defend against. The Western died in the 1970s. It went from the primary genre of Hollywood production, making almost a third of yearly movies at its peak, to a relic of a bygone era requiring revival for new productions. The Western was felled from its high-horse. What murdered it? The direct murderer does not matter, for as one Western about a mistaken murder said, “This is the West, sir. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.” The genre was fueled by the American frontier myth, which also propelled American exceptionalism. As the historical theory behind the frontier myth crumbled in the wake of great social upheaval, especially when related to the American Indian Movement, the driver of Westerns died, resulting in the Western’s demise. From 1968-75, a steady transformation in the genre happened as it struggled to maintain a grip on cultural relevance. I’m not impressed with Bohemian Rhapsody. It mangles the story just as badly as biopics of the early 2000s, to the point of travesty. Like the basic characterization of Freddie Mercury is wrong, and only reinforces a bunch of myths about the man. Heck, there was a movie, called Walk Hard, that satirizes this. But Hollywood will never learn. Just because there’s cool music playing doesn’t make it a good movie. There’s a question in the history profession that if sufficiently answered could not only reshape how we conceive ourselves, but reveal the best course of action for politics around the world. What makes the West strong? While there are many answers, the most popular of these has been Jared Diamond’s "Guns Germs and Steel." You’ll see his argument all over the place, including a NatGeo documentary. But of course it has its detractors, to the point that some historians consider it pseudo-history. Now I think that’s going too far, but there are enough problems with his thesis that we can’t take it as the final answer to these questions.
