Hollywood often likes to make movies about itself. In terms of historical topics, that has to be right up there with presidents and WWII. It also has a fairly set formula for pumping out bio-pics. Often times that means fitting a square peg in a round hole. Detroit is an interesting case for historical accuracy in cinema. I wouldn’t say it is completely accurate, but then again, neither does the film. Instead this is almost entirely disputed history. There are no definitive accounts of what happened, only murky and often self-contradictory information. And this film goes a long way to doing that. It is about the Algiers Motel Incident during the 1967 Detroit Riot. This might seem like a thing that only matters to Californians, but it kinda matters to everyone, since California is somewhat of the cultural capital of the US, which in turn applies to the world due to America’s current hegemonic status. So any divides hurt unity, the deeper the divide the less unity, and thereby there possibly being multiple. With an extremely divisive election behind us, California seems like it has had its underlying regional issues revealed. The state is still reeling. Darkest Hour (2017) is an interesting movie. It messes up almost everything pretty badly to the point of being irksome, but it is also somewhat endearing. Churchill was quite a character, but they took some liberties that are a little too much to handle. Honestly, I don’t know if it could be saved with a bit better historicism. It did have me laughing at a few points. Some of the license taken is necessary, but there are some dangerous misconceptions and falsehoods this movie proliferates. Mudbound is startlingly dark in just the right kind of way. Netflix has had quite a few duds with their movies, but somehow they managed to produce a superb work of historical fiction here. Way back when I started the Based on a True Story series, the second episode was a bit about what I considered to be the best ones - and this movie was at the top. Participant observation is a strange thing for a historian to talk about. Normally it is something that anthropologists think of. The 15:17 to Paris is ashewing for the most accurate movie of the year. This movie is incredible, but for one obvious reason. Clint Eastwood, the director, just straight up hired the actual people involved as actors. Yeah, the top billing for this movie are the actual main characters.
