Let's hearken back to a simpler time. Say, last night? When Thomas Edison inspired me to improve upon the 200 year old design of the carbon arc lamp. Made possible by two pencils and an Arduino. Big rocks get broken down with great bloody maul, get jammed into the hammer mill, are gravity fed to the rod mill. The rod mill grinds the 1/4" minus ore into 50 mesh, the oversize comes out the classifier and get re-ground, the 50 mesh minus slurry gets pumped to the shaker table. The shaker separates the particles according to specific gravity; gold, silver, lead, copper, iron on one end, shmoo on the other. Just something I whipped together on a lazy Sunday after church.

Wetterlings Swedish Axe isn't the best I've ever owned, but it is the most expensive. It's a beautiful piece of blacksmithing. It has a beautiful handle. But the design of the head only makes it suitable for light work. I'll use this for prospecting, but it's not good for any real splitting. It's good for light chopping, and it sucks for making kindling.
Right out of the gate, the wedge fell out. I jammed it back in and it lasted another day. Then the wedge split half in two and flew out. Game over.
According to the pimply faced kid at the hunting store, this is the smallest axe / hatchet that meets the requirements for the grueling Yukon Quest dog race. Think Iditarod, only for men.

Too often I see fellows put up false barriers; "I can't make that, I don't have a 'X'". I long ago rid myself of that toxic excuse "can't". I will or I won't. Along the way, I dispensed with that other toxic word "should". I don't should on anybody, least of all myself. I will or I won't.
I turned down the barrel with a hand drill and a die grinder. I drilled the bore and touch hole by eye. I made my own fuses with a youtube recipe that doesn't work. Instead, I made glue from styrofoam and gasoline. I procured Pyrodex FFF propellant and made my own Napalm paper fuse.
I own a respectable collection of knackered machine tools. But I still like making things with a bare minimum of tools. It's a personal challenge to make "minimum viable" projects. I hope you like this work in progress.

I grind up some Fools Gold that contains tiny quantities of real gold. I wanted to make a copper solution for electroplating using ore I prospected. What I got was something far more interesting. The real gold floats right to the top. Impossible because gold is nineteen times heavier than water. Right?
Yes and no. If the gold particles are small enough then the effect of surface chemistry overcomes the density effect. The gold picks up a positive surface charge and gets stuck on top of the surface tension of the water.
This effect is used to concentrate most metallic ores mined for the past century.
