"The Troubles" is the name given to the sectarian conflict between largely Catholic Republicans and mostly Protestant Unionists that split Northern Ireland from the late 1960s until the Good Friday Agreement of 1998. One figure that often appears on the flags carried by the aptly-named "Orange Order" and who is lionised on Unionist murals is King "Billy" - William of Orange, the Dutch Stadthouder who became King William of England, Ireland and Scotland in 1688. But why is this 17th Century Dutch King still revered and hated in equal measure by many in Northern Ireland in the 19th and still today in the 20th Century? Despite his win there are allegations of widespread voter fraud and clear indications that underhand methods were used in order to give him the advantage over his main political rival Bobi Wine, who was placed under house arrest by the army on the day of the election. Catalonia/Catalunya/Cataluña is an autonomous community in the northeast of Spain that in recent years had an increasingly visible movement asking for full independence, culminating in an election in 2017 that the Spanish government deemed unconstitutional and illegal. In February 2021, the Catalan rapper Pablo Hastél was arrested for lyrics and tweets insulting the Spanish royal family and praising groups such as ETA (Euskadi Ta Askatasuna) and GRAPO (Grupos de Resistencia Antifascista Primero de Octubre), Basque and Marxist armed groups. This has sparked more protests across Spain but especially in Catalonia. In this video I take a look at the history of Catalonia and the roots of its independence movement. Sierra Leone is a small country in West Africa whose civil war lasting from 1991 pit the Revolutionary United Front against the Sierra Leone Army (at times), Kamajors and peace-keeping forces. The 2015 film Beasts of No Nation does not specify in which country it takes place though the scenarios presented for the young protagonist Agu do make it likely it's based on the Sierra Leone Civil War. Afghanistan has seen a seemingly endless cycle of conflict since the Soviet-Afghan War (1979-1989), with the First Afghan Civil War (1989-1992), followed by the victory of the Taliban in the Second Afghan Civil War (1992-1996), the subsequent Northern Rebellion and then the US Invasion of 2001 to strike back at training camps before the new insurgency of 2003 started the protracted phase of fighting still marring the nation to this day. In February 2020 however, the United States and their opponents came closer to achieving a peace agreement than any that have been seen before, promising the withdrawal of US troops in 14 months. Now that the deadline of May is fast approaching, the question remains as to whether Biden will follow the plan as his predecessor set out, that being against almost all the advice given to him by military advisors on the ground. Old Norse was the language spoken by Scandinavian Vikings on their raiding, trading and colonising missions to Britain and the islands around it. The North Germanic languages, those that developed from Old Norse, are those today found in Scandinavia, Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, and Elfdalian, as well as the Insular North Germanic languages found on the Atlantic islands in the form of Icelandic and Faroese. Until around 1850 however, there was another Norse language spoken on the Scottish islands of Orkney and Shetland: the Norn language. In this video I explore the entire history of Haiti leading up to that point, from the Native American Taíno peoples to the coming of the Spanish and establishment of the colony of Santo Domingo with Christopher Columbus, through the French settlement of Sainte-Domingue and the importation of thousands of African slaves leading to the creation of the Voodoo/Vodou belief system and the eventual Haitian Revolution in which these slaves revolted under the leadership of Toussaint Louverture and later Jean-Jacques Dessalines to oust the French with the aide of their native and Polish allies. Afghanistan, after 20 years of war, over a hundred thousand dead and more than a trillion dollars spent by the US and Nato, has this week fallen to the Taliban. This came after the armed group agreed a 'peace deal' with the US in Doha in 2020, their offensive beginning in earnest on the 1st of May 2021. By August, the Taliban were at the gates all the country's provincial capitals and controlled around 70% of its total districts. One by one, Zaranj, Kandahar, Lashkargah, Kunduz, Herat, Mazar-i-Sharif and Jalalabad fell, often with little or no real resistance from the Afghan National Army until only Kabul remained. On the 15th of August, Taliban fighters entered the suburbs and soon overran the capital, on the same day declaring the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan as the former President Ashraf Ghani fled the country and the green-red-black tricolour was torn down from the presidential palace. In this video I address why the Afghan National Armed Forces were so inneffective at stopping the Taliban advance, despite billions of dollars and around 2 decades of training and support from the United States and their allies. I will further look at the role, or lack thereof, of the various warlords such as Ismail Khan, Abdul Rashid Dostum, and Atta Muhammad Noor who were famed for their dogged resistance in the face of the Taliban in the 1990s. Finally, I will look at the strategies employed by the Taliban to grind down their opponents and facilitate the mass surrender of the Afghan National Army as well as how they managed to cripple the government in Kabul. Tigray is a region in the very north of Ethiopia along the border with its former rival Eritrea. It's been in the news recently as since the 4th November 2020 the Ethiopian Army along with the Eritrean Army have been fighting a campaign against the Tigrayan People's Liberation Front (TPLF) for control over the region. The Panjshir Resistance, also known as Second Resistance, Resistance 2, Northern Alliance or National Resistance Force (NRF), is a movement based in Afghanistan's Panjshir Valley and several environs in the surrounding provinces which continue to hold out against the Taliban who swept to power throughout the country in their May 2021 offensive culminating in the Fall of Kabul on 15 August 2021. The Panjshir Resistance are led by Ahmad Massoud, son of the warlord Ahmad Shah Massoud who defended the Panjshir Valley against both Soviet and Taliban aggression in the 1980s and 1990s, and by Amrullah Saleh, the former Vice President and self-proclaimed President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. In return they would pump money and know-how into Afghanistan, particularly by exploiting the rich mineral resources found in abundance under its mountainous terrain and which for decades have been unreachable due to the presence of the guerrilla Taliban.
