Why Do Some Catalans Want Independence From Spain? | History of Catalonia 800 - 2021 (2021x6)

Catalonia/Catalunya/Cataluña is an autonomous community in the northeast of Spain that in recent years had an increasingly visible movement asking for full independence, culminating in an election in 2017 that the Spanish government deemed unconstitutional and illegal. In February 2021, the Catalan rapper Pablo Hastél was arrested for lyrics and tweets insulting the Spanish royal family and praising groups such as ETA (Euskadi Ta Askatasuna) and GRAPO (Grupos de Resistencia Antifascista Primero de Octubre), Basque and Marxist armed groups. This has sparked more protests across Spain but especially in Catalonia. In this video I take a look at the history of Catalonia and the roots of its independence movement. Was it ever an independent kingdom? How long have Catalans wanted independence? And why is Spain so unwilling to let go of its northeastern community?
