The phthalic acid is then converted to phthalic anhydride by dehydration and sublimation. This phthalic anhydride will be used in further synthesis to make phenolphthalein and phthalimide (precursor to anthranilic acid). In this video, phenolphthalein is synthesized by the condensation of phenol and phthalic anhydride. The phenolphthalein is separated from starting materials by several washing steps. In theory you can also just extract the phenolphthalein from the reaction mixture using NaOH solution. This will pull out the phenolphthalein as well as the phenol.
