The Germans had serious plans and done quite a lot of preparations for an attack on Leningrad in 1942, usually this topic is brushed aside as a side-show. Yet, Adrian Wettstein in his phd "Wehrmacht im Stadtkampf" (Wehrmacht in Urban Combat) clearly shows that the amount of preparation was far from minor and that even units from Heeresgruppe Süd that was headed for Stalingrad and the Caucasus (Case Blue) were redeployed. Manstein's 11th Army was replenished and almost up to authorized strength in stark contrast to other divisions. We need to re-examine our view of the Red Army in the Winter War (1939-1940). The traditional narrative is that the Red Army failed in the Winter War, yet, this is only partially correct. We need to take a look at the bigger picture, namely at the effectiveness of the Red Army dealing with severe losses and various problems without collapsing. This allows for a better understanding of the Red Army's performance in Operation Barbarossa (1941) and the war on the Eastern Front in general. The US and British leadership in the Second World War followed the so called “Europe First” or sometimes called “Germany First” strategy, meaning that there was a focus on defeating Germany first and after that focus against the Japanese in the Pacific. Many of the US military leaders were not particularly happy about this arrangement between Roosevelt and Churchill. Now, when it comes to Western Allied Invasion of France in Normandy, June 1944, quite some time is usually spent on discussions why the Germans did get the landing area wrong, namely assuming an invasion at Pas de Calais instead of Normandy. Yet, I think we should take more extended look at the whole situation, for this we need an expanded timeframe and also a look at map that shows on how much coastlines were still under Axis possessions even in May 1944. As you can see that was quite a lot of territory that needed to be covered. Now, if we look at the situation in Summer & Fall 1943, there are several issues. One key problem the United States faced in the Vietnam war was that the enemy was focused mostly on irregular warfare, whereas the US forces were mainly trained to fight in regular war. Although, the Vietnamese were supported by the Soviet Union and Communist China with weapons and sometimes high-tech equipment in general, they were using a “low-tech approach”. This was in stark contrast to the United States that often brought high-technology to the battlefield. There is a recurring error - one that I committed on my own during Tankfest 2018 - namely that Operation Zitadelle / the Battle of Kursk (1943) was stopped by Hitler since the Allies invaded Sicily (Operation Husky). The "Dora" also known as the "Schwerer Gustav" was the largest gun ever built in terms of weight (not caliber). It was originally designed to be used against the French Maginot-Line, but was not ready in May 1940. As such it was used in the Siege of Sevastopol by General Manstein.
