I very often state "there were multiple factors" in this video I talk about how extremely shortsighted mono-causal explanations can be. I make various examples from military history, but also a very simple one regarding a simple diet change (one food replaced with another sub-variant of that food, namely brown rice vs. white rice) that was influenced by so many factors that I was previously not aware of. This is the reason, why I get very suspicious if I hear "the sole reason", especially when it comes to historical actors especially if we talk about large factions with millions of members. The PTRS-41 or Simonov anti-tank rifle was the semi-automatic analog of the single-shot PTRD-41 anti-tank rifle. Soviet Anti-Tank rifles like the PTRS 41 created some trouble for the German Panzers, this is clearly reflected by the introduction of the so-called “Schürzen” Armor Skirts that protected the side hull and turret armor of most Panzers and Sturmgeschütze. The horse was very important for the German Military in the Second World War, the Wehrmacht had around 590 000 horses at the beginning of the war. Similarly, when the Wehrmacht invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941, it brought 600 000 motor vehicles, yet 625 000 horses as well. To get a better understanding, in this video we look at contemporary sources on horses and military horses, which produces some interesting insights. The main source are articles from the encyclopedia “Neuzeitliche Wehrwissenschaften” (Modern Military Sciences) that was published by a former general and contained a preface by General von Fritsch, who back then was the Commander in Chief of the German Army. According to Soviet documents (Soviet General Staff Study) in the Battle of Kursk a mere 16 dogs destroyed ("blown up") 12 German tanks. I found this quite "interesting", so I took a closer look. Time to look at the Heeresversuchanstalt Kummersdorf, which means Army Research or Army Testing Facility, which was not only the home of the famous Maus Panzer, but also a key facility of the German Army in both world wars, when it came to weapon development and testing. Generally, Kummersdorf and its various facilities are shrouded in mystery. Likely the most academic and elaborate work up to today is from Günter Nagel and he notes about the Versuchsstelle Gottow (Testing facility Gottow) that has underground facilities and various unidentified ruins. Why didn’t the United States Army and/or the British Army invade Berlin in 1945? To understand why the Western Allies did not go for Berlin, it important to understand a) the positioning of the various armies and their ongoing operations b) the manpower situation in general, c) the specific manpower situation due to the ongoing war in the Pacific, d) that although the German Forces were mostly beaten, they still could inflict some damage, e) that in some areas public order had to be restored and f) that the Soviets were not limited to Berlin neither. German veterans' statements about the Katyusha (also often called "Stalinorgel" / Stalin Organ) are numerous and at first quite contradicting. What is it with Soviet Guards Armies, Corps, Divisions and other units in World War 2? Were the elite units? Was the title earned or just given? What about Guards Air units? Or the Katyusha units. Well, time to find out. First, although by the end of 1941 only 10 rifle divisions had earned the title , by the end of the war there were more than 100 Guards Rifle Divisions alone. But the Guards title was not limited to the infantry, there were also Guards Tank Divisions.
