Švaba and Ekser are two guys who survive in transitional Serbia by "rolling" stolen goods, most often perfumes of dubious origin. They are constantly in debt and on the verge of ruin, waiting for some miracle to happen. Švaba is a good guy, a loser by profession who, at the age of 33, still lives with his parents. He has taken out a loan from a local criminal, Dule Pacov, and the amount he owes is enormous. Dule Pacov now wants his money back and is talking around town about what he will do to Švaba if he does not repay his debt. Švaba therefore has little choice... He can either find the money or emigrate. His friend Ekser, 44, is also involved in selling smuggled goods for Dule Pacov. He suffers from a constant lack of money and owes three months of rent. However, despite all the troubles that have befallen him, Ekser is ready to defend his friend Švaba at any moment.

In the second episode of the TV series "The Storks Will Return", we learn that storks, unlike many other animals, are monogamous, while Švaba's gay friends are going to Amsterdam to get married. The arrival of Dule Pacov at Krlja's cafe disrupts the celebration of the upcoming wedding. Ekser's conflict with a young man from Dule's entourage causes a tense atmosphere in the cafe, Dule's friends draw guns... Švaba has an idea that by selling the house inherited by his mother Radmila, he will secure the money he needs to return to Dule, who is already seriously threatening him. So Ekser and Švaba head to the village where the house is located, although it is unclear why and how Radmila is the heir of the late Toza.

The beginning of the third episode of the TV series "The Storks Will Return" coincides with the beginning of the day in the village of Baranda. Everyone wakes up except Švaba and Ekser, who are sleeping in a car stuck in a pond whose water reaches up to their necks. Sima, the owner of the puddle they are stuck in, asks them for 20 euros to get them out. Švaba's temperamental reaction annoys Sima, so Ekser and Švaba have to get completely muddy in order to get to dry ground. Completely muddy, they find Toza's house where Aunt Ruža (Mira Banjac) lives.

In the fourth episode of the TV series "The Storks Will Return", we discover that local politicians and businessmen can be very cruel. However, what matters most to Švaba and Ekser is that their car is pulled out of the mud, even though it is very muddy and the engine doesn't work. That's why they stay to sleep at Toza's house. Švaba tries to convince his parents to accept and sell the inherited house in the village of Baranda. Babun, Švaba's school friend who lives in New York, comes to Krlja's cafe. The reason for his arrival is the upcoming anniversary celebration of his graduation. Švaba buys a gun from the drug addict Pikac. Ekser has problems with coughing and paying the rent. He is forced to move out of his rented house. He moves into Krlja's cafe. Aunt Smiljka, who told Švaba's mother that she did not know who the man who left her the house in his will was, admits that she lied. Dule Pacov and Aki leave for Baranda. By decision of Batrić, the arrogant mayor of the village of Baranda, priest Milorad takes over coaching the local football team. Krlja's cafe is under attack by the construction mafia and a corrupt Serbian government official.

Dule Pacov is hanging out with local powerful people in Baranda and plans to open a first-class tavern in the village. Ekser is waiting for the woman of his life, who is worried that she has not been able to hear or see him for days. He invites her to dinner. A worried Milenko seeks advice from Deša Inhofe on how to bring the storks back to the village. A little later, the lawyer informs the distrustful Deša that Toza left him a gold watch that Deša does not want to take. A few days later, Dule is ostensibly buying an apartment for his girlfriend from Vražalić, expecting Vražalić to introduce him to a serious business. He will try to persuade Ekser and Krlja to allow him to obtain the initial capital. Švaba's father expects him to get married as soon as possible, because he wants grandchildren. Švaba's mother reveals to the lawyer that she learned from Aunt Smiljka that Toza is her biological father.

Milenko swears to Jagoda that he will solve the problem of the missing family from Baranda. Marina wakes up in Švaba's embrace, and Sanja comes to Krlja's café and returns all of Ekser's belongings that were with her. She is shaken. Švaba learns from Ruža and lawyer Anastasijević that Toza is his biological grandfather. He takes the ring that Toza left him and asks Marina if she could live in Baranda, but she has to think about it. Pera persuades his brother Bor to sell the inherited land and take the money, but Bora doesn't think so. Deša Inhof will not calm down until he finds out who killed his father.

The festive lunch for the football match is still going on. Dule Pacov offers to "arrange" a transfer for Pera's son, Filip, who is the best player. The mayor, Batrić, supports Milanka in seducing Pera and Vražalić, but does not support Milenko's putting up of posters about the disappearance of the stork from the village. Slavica reveals to Milenko that she sometimes feels like only he understands her. Deša Inhofe learns from Ruža that Toza also left a huge chest that has not yet been opened. During the night, Batrić and his drunken guests decide to build the largest European landfill for imported garbage in Baranda and thus earn a lot of money. Dule Pacov brings prostitutes (Mara, Barbara, Kristina and Emanuela) to Bosanac's house where they will stay until the renovation of the club in Toza's house is finished. Discovering that the prostitutes' passports are with Švaba, Ekser accuses him of becoming a pimp. Švaba gives Ekser the passports and he returns them to the prostitutes, who are confused because they think they won't make any money. Mara tries to leave, but Dule Pacov and Aki bring her back. The argument over the sale of the land continues in Bora's family, and Nadica goes to the lake with Švaba. They make love and Švaba mentions Marina. Nadica is very disappointed.
