Dr. Ebonie Vincent's first patient today is Charles Thomas of Colton, Calif. The 52-year-old has type 2 diabetes and a foot that looks terrible: It all started with a blister that led to gangrene. Then there was a bad infection on the right big toe that wouldn't heal, so eventually the toe had to be removed, and subsequently another. So Charles is down to three toes and a wound that still hasn't closed. Dr. Ebonie sees a lot of work ahead, especially since Charles has one big wish: He wants to wear sandals in the summer.
