On September 1, 1939, private Dolas arrives in a night train on the Polish-German border. He oversleeps his station, his rifle accidentally fires and soon the German assault on Poland starts. Dolas, convinced that he is responsible for starting WWII. Finding himself in a POW camp he plans to redeem himself by joining the Polish forces still fighting abroad.
As a "volunteer" pvt Dolas is conscripted into the French Foreign Legion somewhere in Africa. By a strange twist of fate he becomes the cook of a military camp in the middle of a desert.

As a "volunteer" pvt Dolas is conscripted into the French Foreign Legion somewhere in Africa. By a strange twist of fate he becomes the cook of a military camp in the middle of a desert. It appears that even there his wits will become handy. Especially that the French will soon switch sides, and the British and Italian armies are about to clash nearby.
Franek Dolas manages to avoid Italian court martial, but he is captured by the Germans as a deserter. On his way to a penal battalion on the Eastern Front he manages to escape a plane and land right in the middle of Poland.
