As a challenge to myself, I'm trying to I'll write/record something new, anything new, every day of January 2011, just so long as it's "a complete musical statement" (whatever that means). I'll be using Garage Band, so the quality level of sequencing probably won't be that high, but this is mainly just so I can get my creative chops going.
This first one is a little spastic and jumps around a lot from idea to idea without ever really coalescing, but there might be a nugget of something worth keeping in there, I don't know.
Here's the score. Sorry about the camera angle not really capturing my bass playing...whoops.

This second one is based on an idea I've worked out in the past - the first 4 measures is meant to be heard one way (and 1, and 2, and 3, and 4), but the rhythmic scheme gets turned around once the bass/drums come in. That 5/4 groove is something I might want to keep for later, otherwise, it came out decent.
Here's the score.

This third one is a little out, but I think it works all right. It's a 5-bar passacaglia in D whole tone, with a canon in Eb whole tone superimposed on top, with a free melody voice in Eb whole tone on top of that. Weird. It eventually settles down into a groovey thing based on the free melody. Enjoy?

This fourth one is a minimalist piano tune, performed by yours truly, on a really cruddy old MIDI controller with plastic keys and the worst possible action, so excuse the performance please. I tried to make it as simple as I possibly could, and yet keep it feeling very "unsettled."
Here's the score, enjoy!

This is number 5, a fairly stylistically consistent ragtime. You can see that I have a rather diverse taste in composition, given the previous offerings, haha. This one had to be sequence, unfortunately, because I just don't have anywhere near the piano technique to play it - hence the lack of a video. It's the classic ragtime formula, including modulating to the key of the IV after the recap of the A, although I did sneak in a rather anachronistic bluesy lick towards the end of it all.
Check out the score down here. Enjoy!

Number 6 here is just a nice little melody in 6/8 that repeats three times with different harmonizations every time. Nothing special, but still fun. Enjoy.

Number 7 is pretty much just a parody of math metal. It's nothing but tritones (actually, all 6 tritones happening at once) and the pattern is based upon the Fibbonacci sequence.
Yes. I went there. Here's the score.

Number 9 here is a nice little psychotic waltz in Lydian b3. The bridge is a jazzier thing with a new, specific harmonic technique I was trying out...which kinda failed...it kind of sounds like crap. However, the waltz bit I enjoy rocking out to.

Number 10 is based upon the idea of "confused" rhythm, which is something I seem to really dig. It almost sounds like two separate, unrelated tempos and music at the beginning....very Charles Ives. Take your pick as to whether or not you like it. I lifted the 5/8 guitar ostinato straight from Billy Child's In Carson's eyes of his album Lyric....great record.

Number 11 is a 3-part fugue. I have zero piano technique, so excuse the performance method of hacking away at each voice individually. Baroque and roll, muthaf*ckas.

Number 13 here is an attempt at a Strayhorn/Ellington style ballad. Part of the reason why I don't normally write in this style is because, like probably only Bach before him, Ellington reached absolutely mastery of the music, and to try and write like he did is rather depressing, actually, haha. Still, I had a lot of fun with this, playing piano too!

Groovey little chord solo thing to Autumn Leaves. I recorded this a while ago, but it's just now going up, for some reason. Enjoy! The bass is a Washburn AB-40, and its way sexy, although I do miss the high C string for chord melody stuff.

Solo free improvisation for bass guitar in any real sense beyond random wankery is almost non-existent, and it's something that I've been checking out recently. "Free improvisation" is definitely not the same as free jazz, and it doesn't me playing "out" versus "in." It simply means creating a logical and well-constructed piece of music with little to no given structure.
For examples of great solo instrumental free improvisation, check out Keith Jarrett's the Koln concert, or Dave Liebman's The Tree.
Skip to about 4 minutes in if you want to check out the free improv without the chatter.
