It wasn't just hard to communicate this, it was surprisingly hard to come up with them. When we're confronted with negative experiences, we want to analyze them and think about them and remember them for future use. But with positive emotions, we often just feel them and enjoy them, which is wonderful, but also leads to us putting less weight on them and it seems like they take up less space in our minds. No one feels comfortable shouting at the world about how great their day was, or what a cool person they met. Recognizing and harping on the positive experiences we have is a great way, I think, to both have a better outlook on life, and have more positive experiences. So that's what I did in today's video.

In which Hank discusses the human condition and attempts to understand monstrous displays of wealth. There was a lot more I wanted to say on this topic but: 1. Four minute time limit and 2. It's really hard to talk about this stuff without getting judgy. The thing to remember is that, to many people, my house and computer and dog and air conditioner are monstrous displays of wealth. I, personally, have more money than 50% of Americans just by virtue of not having any debt. Albeit on a smaller scale, I make the same irrational purchasing decisions and choose my own very temporary pleasure over the alleviation of real suffering every single day. Part of that is just being required to participate in culture or else be very socially uncomfortable, but it's also just straight up selfishness. I do not know how to counteract this except through force, which is why I believe in taxes, even if I hate paying them :-).

When I first thought maybe I would make this video I typed "Muslims Aren't Dangerous" into Google to see what other people had written on the subject, or if maybe I was imagining the need for this discussion, but all I found was article after article about how dangerous Muslims are. It was so sad, so discouraging, so angering. I would read those articles and find myself, not usually, but occasionally saying "Well, I suppose you do have a point" but, of course, they didn't. They were highlighting my own ignorances and bias...we know so little of each other...but what I have found is that the vast majority of people are good, and this debate rests wholly on the idea that that is not true of Muslims.

If the distribution systems available to stories affect what kind of stories get told, then think of all of the wonderful stories that simply aren't being told. Information that simply never had a way to get out in its most effective way. We all know that some stories are better movies than books, or better books than movies, but for so long publishing companies and book sellers (and book buyers) shunned short-format fiction because it didn't make sense financially. It was hard to ship around, not a great value for the reader, and hard to make money on for the publisher. So most short-form media we ingested was video or non-fiction (magazine articles.) But now that there's a simple system for digital content, suddenly serialized novels and novellas are in high demand. The kind of content that wasn't produced for a generation now has an audience again. But what about all of those amazing short stories and novellas that we didn't get in the intervening time?! Maybe all of those creators were writing novels and we got great work out of them but, then again, maybe we didn't. And now we have all of this infrastructure built up around novels. not just in book stores, but in our own minds! The idea of novels, their importance. Not to mention the fact that most classes you can and will take will focus on that format because that's the format that has, for the most part, existed. And teachers might even discourage students from publishing in other formats because they're "not legitimate" or because the teachers grew up in a world where there was no market for that. But instead, in this video, I mostly just yell at you without saying anything because my brain is totally fried. HOPE YOU DON'T MIND!

This experience is universal, but I think we tamp it down inside ourselves after a certain age. Yes, the world is complicated. Yes there are bad things in it. In this video I start out thinking about how easy it is for me to forget how cool my life is and then extend that to all of humanity because I think that this is kinda how humanity is. Now, I don't think the way we focus on problems (or are focusing on problems right now) is necessarily the most effective, but it's undeniably human. I think we need to focus less on who are opponents are and more on what we are actually trying to achieve. More and more in America, I see the discourse as "The problem is those people who are in the way of us solving the problem" rather than "The problem is the problem." It turns out solving problems (especially human problems) is very complicated and it's very easy to misunderstand the stakeholders and people's worldviews and human nature and to think that the opposition is evil when in fact the opposition is simply different.

In which John recommends many, many books that will make great gifts this holiday season. Books really do make the best Christmas presents, and I am not at all biased in saying that.
