A prominent investigative journalist dies during a stay in a Viennese hospital, supposedly of heart failure. In reality, however, the man, who was working on a book about the Austrian arms trade, was murdered by the nurse Fritz Posch. Posch was paid to do so by the private detective Bergmann and the former mercenary Schulz. In order to get rid of the annoying confidant, Bergmann and Schulz push Posch off a railway bridge a little later. A perfect plan - if it weren't for an eyewitness to the second murder. And if Posch hadn't leaked information to nurse Ines beforehand... Brandtner and his colleagues quickly establish a connection between the two murders. But then they get an unexpected adversary in the form of Krapp, an officer of the state police, who allegedly investigates Schweiger himself. Krapp unceremoniously relieves Brandtner of the case. A dead baby is found in a church. During the autopsy, Dr. Graf finds a feather in his trachea that comes from an exotic bird. Through complicated research, Brandtner and his team come across a criminal ring that steals babies in Italy and sells them for large sums of money in Austria. During the investigation, the young Italian Sandra Fossati comes to Vienna, who searches for her stolen baby on her own and puts her life in danger. Events take a turn for the worse: Brandtner and Rex have to catch the criminals, find the cleverly hidden stolen babies and save the young Italian woman, who is being pursued by the gang.

This time, however, Rieder comes up with new gruesome motifs: two seemingly dead women, eerily draped and laid out.
