Jack Crow sets out in search of job as servant. He helps the ant, the crow and the fish on the way. For his help each one of them gives him a whistle as a present; when he needs them he should just blow the whistles. He hires himself out to the king who gives him such a task that he needs the animals' help. In the end he fulfils his job so well that the king gives him a lot of gold coins for his service.

The needle, the crab, the egg and the cock set out on their travels. For the night they move in the foxes' den. When the foxes arrive from their robbery the needle and its companion give them a lecture.

The poor man leads the usurious master, the clerks, the gendarmes, the soldiers, the kings, the enemy army a dance with his magic violin. With his magic table he gives the poor to eat.

In his big trouble the king promises to give her daughter unborn to the devil. The devil takes along the poor princess at her age of 15 to the hell but the girl escapes from there with Johnny’s help then they get married.

Only the youngest one of the poor man’s three sons can protect the grapes because he gave food to the frog. The frog repays his help with three magic horses. These horses help the boy to win the princess' hand.

The Szekler woman makes all the things inversely. Her husband gets rid of her with a contrivance. The devil takes her upon him but he cannot shake her off. A soldier sets the devil free from her so in his thankfulness the devil makes a king from him.

The prince wants the poor man's two little bulls and they give him an all giving little mill for the bulls. On his way home he manages to get a magic stick and a magic hat. Shortly he saves the land with them.

The cows wander away from the little cowboy therefore he gets in trouble. But he frees himself from the trouble artfully.

The devil's son eats the poor woodman's maize porridge therefore his father orders him to serve the woodman for three years. During this time the poor man is growing rich.

The shopkeeper, the king and the poor man get lost in the woods one after the other. A princess transformed into a hedgehog leads out all three of them. In the end he wins one princess' hand and they celebrate their wedding.

The stepmother sends the hard-working girl to serve somebody. After a year she returns home with gold, silver and other treasures. As the bad-hearted woman sees this she sends also her own daughter to serve somebody, but she is lazy therefore she returns home in thorn and bloodstained clothes.

Each one of the poor man's four sons learns a craft. The dragon kidnaps the princess. The four young men bring the princess back to the king with the help of their crafts. In his thankfulness the king presents them with four provinces of the country.

Three students meet a peasant man. The students want to make the peasant feel that they know more than him but the peasant fools them.
