This week's theme is TEACHING! Ecology is a fascinating and complicated science. But if you mix it with the fascinating and complicated science of economics, you end up giving value to the things our world does for us.
Those things, in ecological lingo, are "ecosystem services" and you can actually put price tags on them. That's what I want to teach John about today.

In which John reads from the J. D. Salinger novel The Catcher in the Rye in tribute to Salinger, who died today at the age of 91. Having done so, I now immediately return to paternity leave. Like all novelists who write about teenagers, I owe an immense debt to Salinger--not only because of Holden Caulfield but also because of the hauntingly beautiful portraits of the Glass family.
Thank you all for your kind wishes for young Henry, who is made of awesome.

In which John Green discusses his virulent hatred for pennies and nickels, two utterly irrelevant coins that inexplicably remain money in the United States of America. It costs more than 1.7 cents to make a 1 cent penny coin in the US; nickels are even more ridiculous, costing more than nine cents to produce.
UPDATE: Those statistics are out of date. In 2009, it cost 1.6 cents to make a penny and 6.1 cents to make a nickel; the US Mint lost 22 million on penny and nickel production, not the 70 million they lost in 2008. (This is because the recession has made zinc and nickel cheaper.) Thank to youtuber http://www.youtube.com/sivartis for the correction.

In which Hank discusses why he had a viscerally negative reaction to the news that Rocky Horror was doing Glee.
Yes, there's part of me that doesn't want to see Rocky Horror get auto-tuned. And let me be clear when I say...NEARLY EVERY SONG ON GLEE IS AUTOTUNED. I don't know why they do it...the kids can sing...but they do it anyway, which I find extremely annoying.
But it's cool for a few reasons too.
But I think the big reason that I have an issue is that Rocky is about an experience. People often take it out of the theater and wonder "what's the big deal?" Because, without the theater experience, it isn't a big deal. The "big deal" of it is that the people who watch the Rocky Horror Picture Show made movie-watching a two-way experience. They became part of the movie...and they will forever be a part of the movie...if only in my head. I can't hear the lines of the actual songs anymore...I hear the callbacks.
I don't know how glee will handle it, but I anticipate that they will strip out all of the interesting things about RHPS and just sing a few songs. Who knows though!
But if you're over 18...you should go try and find a Rocky Horror showing in your area...because it will be an experience...it might be awkward...it might be confusing...but it will be an experience.

In which John discusses the New York Times's web-based application allowing each of us to examine the extent and complexity of the United States federal budget deficit and the difficulty of balancing the budget. Do we increase taxes or cut spending? Or, more plausibly but less politically viable, both raise taxes and lower spending? Also there is some talk of pizza shirts.

In which John and Hank Green reunite to discuss the 2010 Project for Awesome and then proceed to challenge nerdfighteria to solve a dinnertable dispute in re. the energy output needed to create moon pasta and then discuss the new t-shirts at DFTBA Records.
The idea of the project for awesome is simple. You make a video in support of a charity you wish to support, and hopefully lots of people will watch and favorite and comment upon the video. P4A videos are particularly awesome and effective when they're well-edited videos that show us how the organization you support changes lives for the better.

In which Hank proves that he can think too much about ANYTHING by thinking too much about Tongue Twisters. It's all about the sibilant fricatives baby. Tongue twisters are actually a universal game that all people play regardless of language. The best ones have a few qualities:
1. They will trip you up
2. They're fun to say when you get it right
3. Opportunities for Embarassment
4. Excellent Rhythm and cadence and possibly rhyme as well.
Psycho-linguists (yes, that's a thing) still don't know exactly why tongue twisters trip people up, but they do know that it has more to do with the mind than the tongue. But the point is that speech is far more complicated and wonderful than we generally give it credit for, and tongue twisters are one of the few opportunities we really get to enjoy how amazing it really is.
