Year 28 BC, Tarraco, Hispania. Caesar Augustus settled in the Iberian Peninsula to follow the conquests of the last Iberian redoubts. Pompeu, his doctor, in company of his whole family, must move from Rome to Tarraco to take care of the emperor's health. On the voyage, the ship carrying utensils and slaves disappears. The family is forced to take turns starting. When they move, they are attacked by rebels.

The batch of Iberian slaves that Pompeu bought seems like a representation of human misery. In the central courtyard of the house begins the work of washing them, cutting their hair and nails. Little by little, human beings appear that catch the attention of the family; especially Numancia, which leaves the men of the Scipio clan stunned. Meanwhile, Caesar has problems with impotence and Pompeu needs the help of his terrible mother-in-law to find a remedy.

Nobody likes Pompeu’s decision to join Arinsal: neither his wife, Claudia, nor the rest of the Scipio family – in particular his little daughter Julia. Drusilla and Vespasian intend to steal some of the gold from the campaign against the Asturians, which General Vespasian and his right hand, Marc, are about to undertake. That is why Antoni will accompany them, even though he is suffering for his life. If Caesar discovers them, he will kill them in retaliation.
Caesar suspects that he is not receiving all the gold he should receive from the military campaigns, and entrusts Marc to spy on Vespasian.
