General Vespasian returns to Tarraco by surprise from a campaign against the Asturians and the Scipio family decides to receive him with a big banquet. Vespasian is engaged to Marcia and this marriage is of great interest to Drusilla, because she sees it as a unique opportunity to gain power and good business. When Marcia sees Vespasian, she is horrified, because she finds him too big for her.
