This is the Levant Mine. Also nicknamed the mine under the sea. It was first opened in 1820, and would eventually reach 2000 feet deep into the earth. But also a full mile underneath the Atlantic Ocean. I’m sure you can imagine what might happen if one of the tunnels were to fail. Incredibly, that isn’t even the worst of the conditions within. In 1788, the British began sending prisoners to Australia to alleviate their overcrowded prisons and as part of their strategy to start colonizing the land. Many of these men were not charged with serious offenses, and so after their sentence would be released and begin a new life. Other prisoners would only continue to misbehave, and the worst of these would be sent to the remote and brutal prison colonies in Tasmania. And the worst of these colonies was the Sarah Island Prison where the conditions and punishments were truly horrific. So much so that the prisoners would make frequent escape attempts. Unfortunately, those who were successful were then faced with the harsh reality of the wild and uninhabited Tasmanian outback. And the things they had to do to survive here were perhaps more horrific than the prison itself.

This is Clipperton Island. It is just a small barren ring of coral in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In the late 19th century, countries fought for ownership of it for a rare resource the island possessed. To stake their own claim, Mexico sent several families to colonize it, and supplies were regularly sent to keep them alive. Horrifyingly, at some point, these crucial supplies stopped coming, and once it was clear they’d been abandoned, one of these inhabitants revealed himself as a true monster. And this didn’t have to do with a lack of food. This is their horrifying story.

In October of 1628, a trade ship set sail from the Netherlands with gold and gems to be traded for spices in Indonesia. Unbeknownst to the captain, the danger of the voyage was not from the storms and rough waters they’d encounter but instead something sinister brewing within the ship itself. In the end, this would result in the loss of the majority of the over 300 passengers, but even worse than that, the prolonged suffering of many of the survivors. On July 6th, 1940, a man was fishing on a Lake infamous in the mountains of Washington state. As he drifted along in his boat, he saw some sort of figure in the water. When he got closer, it looked to be something wrapped in a blanket. Then, when he reached in to grab whatever it was, he immediately recoiled in horror. Imagine you were in a small, metal, airtight compartment in a submarine stuck on the bottom of the ocean. All around, you can hear metal groaning, rushing water and knocks on the hull from the rescue crew trying to free you. At the same time, you and the men around you are perfectly silent, forbidden from talking so that you don’t run out of air before the rescuers get to you. This is exactly what happened to the crew of a military sub in 1953, and this is their horrifying story.

There is a place in Canada’s NW territories that is as mysterious as it is remote. It’s a place that’s known for its incredible beauty while simultaneously having a reputation for something darker. Some of the names of the areas in the region include Deadman Valley, Sunblood Mountain, and, most infamously, the Valley of the Headless Men. All of these names were supposedly inspired by the events that took place here. This is all especially strange when you consider that not a single person lives here, and the only way into to the area is by float plane or by boat up a long winding river. It just seems impossible that so many incidents could have occurred in a place where there isn’t anyone, and yet they have. In the Summer of 1990, a man was hitchhiking along the Hume Highway in Australia on what he thought was the adventure of a lifetime. The driver who picked him up was friendly, and the journey was off to a great start. Unbeknownst to the man, though, the driver was actually a true monster, and what would happen in the next few moments would lead to the discovery of some of the most horrific crimes in Australian history. In 1552, one of the largest ships in the world at the time was travelling around the southern tip of Africa with over 600 hundred people aboard. Before it made it, several violent storms forced them to abandon the ship off the coast of South Africa. The more than 500 survivors were then forced to make a brutal trek hundreds of miles to the nearest settlement. During which, they battled hunger, dehydration, and worst of all, the people they encountered along the way. What followed wasn’t just the loss of life in the shipwreck itself but the slow, agonizing descent into suffering for many of those who lived through it.
