Despite not forming over the world’s massive oceans, it would go on to rival the strength of a hurricane with ferocious winds, blinding snow, and towering 35 foot or 11 meter waves. Multiple rescue attempts were quickly organized, but when divers finally managed to enter the vessel, they uncovered a profoundly disturbing scene. On October 8th 1871, two catastrophes of almost apocalyptic proportions unfolded at the same time in the US just a few hundred miles from one another. These raged simultaneously, unbeknownst to the people involved, and one would go on to be the deadliest in American history, while the other would be one of the most destructive, bringing an entire city to its knees. The franklin expedition of 1845 is one of the most infamous expeditions in the history of exploration, resulted in the disappearance, and later disturbing findings of the fate of the crew. In fact, though, this was not his first expedition. Franklin made several trips to the most northern and unexplored reaches of north america 20 years earlier, one of which is equally infamous for different reasons. And it is maybe even more gruesome. Because, a first hand account can make a story much more horrific than one that’s pieced together by archeological findings. In the winter 1870, a man entered deep into the canadian north with his family for hunting. In the spring, however, only the man returned. And the story the man told afterward, didn’t seem right, prompting a search for the man’s camp. When it was discovered, it would be one of the most gruesome scenes in Canadian history, so much so that it almost intermingled with legend. As a quick warning for the skeptics out there, you probably won’t like how this story starts. But, I promise if you stick with it, it comes around. On Saturday march 11, 1967, a little single engine cesna set off, from Portland bound for San Francisco, on what was supposed to be a relatively short and routine flight. However, several hours into their flight, they encountered a freak storm that would cause the plane to crash on a literal mountainside. Miraculously, all the occupants would survive the initial crash, but what they would go on the endure in the next few weeks would be one of the most prolonged and grueling ordeals in the history of the region. This is Kazynet. It’s just a tiny collection of houses and a single railroad in the middle of the Siberian taiga. On the night of August 14th, 1989, a regularly scheduled train came through this cold, lonely stretch of woods until approaching something up ahead on the tracks. At first, the conductors couldn’t tell what they were looking at, but when they could, the discovery would be one of the most gruesome and horrifying mysteries in modern Russian history. There is an old anecdote about a doctor being asked what time period he would go back to, if he had a time machine. Tellingly, the doctor apparently said something along the lines of, I certainly wouldn’t go back before antibiotics. This is Lake Peigneur, or at least, it used to be. In 1980, something happened here beneath the surface that would forever and drastically change the lake and the surrounding area. It would be one of the most violent and destructive phenomena to have ever occurred. As always, viewer discretion is advised.

There was a practice many years ago that most people aren’t aware of - one that preyed on the most vulnerable. It’s a practice that is so disturbing that it almost seems impossible to even think about, and yet, it still occurred up until the beginning of the 20th century. This was a practice known as baby farming. Without getting into too many details just yet, it is exactly as horrific as it sounds, and it attracted some of the worst people to ever walk the earth. Lenin Peak. At 7,134m, or 23,406ft tall, it is the most climbed mountain on Earth that is over 7 km tall. And it’s easy to see why just by looking at it. It looks a fair bit wider than it is tall, giving it a much gentler slope and making it a much less technical climb than most mountains of its size. It’s even developed a reputation for being a relatively safe mountain, but that’s not quite the whole story. In a cruel twist of irony, despite this reputation, it’s also the site of some of the most harrowing expeditions to ever have occurred, including the single deadliest mountain expedition in recorded history. This is Sawney Bean’s cave. It’s quite beautiful from the outside, and the surrounding countryside and ocean even more so. But this beauty is deceptive. The Sahara Desert is, without exaggeration, one of the harshest regions on the planet. But most people know that, to some degree. What’s often underappreciated, though, is just how massive it is. It is by far the largest hot desert on the planet. And, in fact, for a comparison, it’s about a million square kilometres larger than the contiguous United States. Now imagine trying to cross it, let alone build something across. That is exactly what happened in the 1880s, and the results would be horrifying, but not just because of the harsh terrain. 1880 Trans-Saharan Expedition

There is a terrifying phenomenon happening all across the world on farms that most people don’t know about. Workers show up in the morning, get to work in a particular area, something happens, and then they leave in a body bag. And although this is a danger commonly known to farmers, it keeps happening anyway. In fact, by some measures, this phenomenon is on the rise. As always, viewer discretion is strongly advised.

This is the Ocean Ranger. When it was launched, it was said to be the largest oil rig in the world. And it was truly impressive. It was like a massive floating stadium built to withstand the worst weather conditions of the North Atlantic Ocean. But on February 14th, 1981, something would happen on board that, for the crew, would turn it into the worst place on earth to be stranded. This is Centralia. On the surface, it looks like a quiet little town in the middle of Pennsylvania’s coal country, but look a little closer and you’ll notice something is off. If you walk the abandoned roads here, sometimes they’ll crack open without warning and spew steam and smoke. Some are even hot to the touch. In other areas, you can see where sinkholes have opened up, and in some cases swallowed entire homes. There’s this almost primal sense that something isn’t quite right, but at the same time, your brain is telling you that it’s probably nothing. A far worse feeling, though, is the fear of realizing that you were actually being watched. In the months preceding April 1922, a family felt exactly that, and what followed would become one of the most horrifying events in German History. Unfortunately, they would find exactly what they were looking for. They had no way of knowing it at the time, but in doing so, they unleashed a disturbing chain of events that would go on to affect the lives of thousands of people. This was the Chosei Coal Mine. From a pier on the coast, it stretched thousands of feet under the ocean. Like many of these mines, the conditions were horrific. The tunnels were dark, water seeped in, and the men could literally hear boats in the ocean above them. But even beyond just the conditions, maybe the most disturbing part was that many of the men who went in day after day were not there voluntarily. Yellowstone National Park is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Even just between the mountains and the wildlife, it would already be one of the most beautiful, but there are other features that make it truly unique. The thermal features at Yellowstone, including the famous painted pot pools, are some of the most striking features found anywhere. They almost don’t even look like they’re from this planet. But, as is often the case, this beauty is deceptive. Many of these pools bubble away at close to boiling, and some are as acidic as battery acid. On October 30th, 1928, an employee walked down the steps of the Lake Bluff City Hall furnace room. Upon opening the door, he was met with an absolutely horrific scene. There was a woman on the floor, without clothing, with burns so severe that they were down to the bone in some places. When asked what happened to her and who had done it, the woman would go on to whisper something that sounded completely impossible. This was so much so that it’s still baffling almost 100 years later. This is the story of the Lake Bluff Furnace Girl, and although the events in this video are fleeting and non descriptive, they are still highly disturbing, so viewer discretion is strongly advised.
