In November of 1913, a storm unlike any other descended on the Great Lakes. Despite not forming over the world’s massive oceans, it would go on to rival the strength of a hurricane with ferocious winds, blinding snow, and towering 35 foot or 11 meter waves. In early August 2000, reports began to surface about a disabled submarine stranded beneath the Barents Sea. Multiple rescue attempts were quickly organized, but when divers finally managed to enter the vessel, they uncovered a profoundly disturbing scene. On October 8th 1871, two catastrophes of almost apocalyptic proportions unfolded at the same time in the US just a few hundred miles from one another. These raged simultaneously, unbeknownst to the people involved, and one would go on to be the deadliest in American history, while the other would be one of the most destructive, bringing an entire city to its knees. The franklin expedition of 1845 is one of the most infamous expeditions in the history of exploration, resulted in the disappearance, and later disturbing findings of the fate of the crew. In fact, though, this was not his first expedition. Franklin made several trips to the most northern and unexplored reaches of north america 20 years earlier, one of which is equally infamous for different reasons. And it is maybe even more gruesome. Because, a first hand account can make a story much more horrific than one that’s pieced together by archeological findings. In the winter 1870, a man entered deep into the canadian north with his family for hunting. In the spring, however, only the man returned. And the story the man told afterward, didn’t seem right, prompting a search for the man’s camp. When it was discovered, it would be one of the most gruesome scenes in Canadian history, so much so that it almost intermingled with legend. As a quick warning for the skeptics out there, you probably won’t like how this story starts. But, I promise if you stick with it, it comes around. On Saturday march 11, 1967, a little single engine cesna set off, from Portland bound for San Francisco, on what was supposed to be a relatively short and routine flight. However, several hours into their flight, they encountered a freak storm that would cause the plane to crash on a literal mountainside. Miraculously, all the occupants would survive the initial crash, but what they would go on the endure in the next few weeks would be one of the most prolonged and grueling ordeals in the history of the region.
