After 20 years of absence, Hélène Barizet, brilliant conductor with atypical methods, is back in Paris to take the lead of the Philharmonia, a national orchestra reputed to be a "killer of conductors". The Maestro, determined to transmit her passion and save the orchestra in turmoil, faces hostility from the management and Yvan Borowski, the representative of the musicians, openly opposed to his appointment. Hélène chooses Selena Rivière, a young tuttist from the third row, whom she calls first violin, to help replace her father’s old friend Vladimir Gregoriu. But how do you transmit when all you want is to break from your past? Returning home, Hélène faces the family curse that forced her into exile.

The success of the first concert allowed Barizet to assert her authority, but the flooding of the auditorium seriously threatened the future of the orchestra. Without additional funding, this is insured death. Léopold Saint-Just, the director, then contacted Rafael Crozes, a patron with a sulfurous past, unaware that Hélène and him were linked by a passion as strong as it was destructive. The Maestro will have to face Crozes to protect the Philharmonia. But her mother’s death and rumors of adultery about her husband weakens her. Selena then decides to sacrifice herself to help Hélène and prove to her that she was right to trust her.

The mysterious death of a musician during the evening at Crozes is like a bomb. In addition to the mourning, the reputation of a cursed orchestra destabilizes the Philharmonia and instills doubt in Hélène who had a violent argument with the bassist, Jeff Moretti, just before his death. Does it have a link with this disappearance? Léopold Saint-Just, the musician's hidden lover, is convinced of this. Faced with the pressure, and as her husband, Peter Faulkner, left her for Agathe Robinson, the horn player, Hélène's mental state declines under the helpless eyes of Selena. Are her troubles the manifestation of his genius or the madness within her?

Determined to get rid of the conductor whom he believes responsible for the death of the oboist, the director takes advantage of the fall in the middle of Barizet's concert to replace her. The musicians threaten to go on strike and demand her immediate return. Although Yvan and his son Mattéo Borowski, who became assistant conductor, turn out to be unexpected allies, the presence of Hélène exacerbates the tensions within the orchestra. Crozes then demands that she return to live with him or risk withdrawing his funding from the Philharmonia. Exhausted, the Maestro gives up. Convinced of being dangerous to those around her, like her own mother, shattered by Huntington's disease, Hélène decided to return to New York, abandoning Selena and the orchestra. Her father, Jean Barizet, then reveals the truth about her condition to her.

Listening to her musicians play, where she only heard admiration, she discovers hatred. If quick to unmask the genius, the conductor must recognize the madness lurking in the shadows that she encouraged in spite of herself. Is it too late to regain harmony and confidence? Time is running out as the final concert prepares. Hélène plays her last card, that of a great musician and a generous woman. But will she be able to keep death at bay?
