ETT Season 5, episode 1: Dig it — A new snowboard press inspired by an old Hawaiian cooking technique! In this episode of Every Third Thursday, Dave Lee and crew drive up to Mt. Hood Oregon posting up at a backwoods snowboarder’s camp with the goal of building a snowboard using foraged materials and a hand dug dirt press. This snowboard is the definition of local with the crew gathering materials from the surrounding forest to build the core of the snowboard. The real challenge comes when it’s time to press all these materials together to seal the layers. Will they be able to cure the board using hot coals and a shallow dirt mold? We’ll find out as the board is put to the test high above on the glaciated snowfield at Mt. Hood’s Timberline Resort. See how this woodsy earth-cured nature board performs!

In this episode of ETT, Dave Lee and the Signal Snowboards crew team up with Matt Davis from namethemachine, Samy Kamkar and Alex Nano to build a snowboard that acts like a video game controller to control the playback of the music. The crew build sensors into the snowboard and create custom software to gather data and manipulate the soundtrack based on the boards motions. Signal rider Daniel Brown tests out the snowboard at Bear Mountain, creating his own custom park riding soundtrack. What would you want to program into this open source board? ETT Season 5, episode 4: The first pro tested combination skateboard/snowboard! In this episode Dave Lee and the Signal Snowboards crew team up with Lithe, a small skateboard operation out of California that’s using composites in skateboards in a really unique and cool way. The goal of this build is to adapt Lithe’s unique carbon fiber building process to create a snowboard that can double as a skateboard. The board needs to be bomber enough for X Games pro skater Mitchie Brusco to skate on Woodward’s Megaramp, but with enough flex so that we can still turn on snow. We test this dual board out on Camp Woodward’s Megaramp and on the snowy park jumps at Woodward Copper and it got two Mega thumbs up! What do you think of this do everything board? The solution — combining a snowboard and griddle in one! Sounds easy, but the challenge of creating a surface hot enough to fry an egg took multiple tries. The Signal crew came up with an ingenious solution and the end result is slopeside breakfast sandwiches for the whole crew cheffed up on a shreddable snowboard. Watch Signal rider Brandon Schroeder get this board cookin’ down the slopes of Mountain High! How many different uses can you think of for this awesome griddle board? ETT Season 5, episode 6: It feels like summer here in California and we’ve got surfing on our minds as we patiently wait for winter to return. In this episode Dave Lee and the Signal Snowboards crew play around with surfboard stringers — the stringer is the thin strip of wood that runs down the middle of the surfboard to increase the strength and rigidity of the foam board. Dave teams up with Appelcore Stringer to create laminated veneers to use in the construction of two snowboards — one a traditional core snowboard and the other a totally experimental veneer laminate board at half the thickness of a normal snowboard. The crew bails on the beach for the mountains to test out these crossover boards. Does this surf technology make for a great snowboard? Hosoi himself stops by the factory to add some crucial design input to the shape (wow!). Mr. Fun gets a custom Hosoi grip tape job and then it’s off to the streets of Boston where historic amounts of snow have fallen to see if Mr. Fun delivers on the promise of fun. ETT Season 5, episode 9: In this episode of Every Third Thursday Dave Lee takes on the challenge of building a snowboard and snowboard press using materials exclusively sourced from the aisles of a home improvement store. Dave and the Rosolowski brothers comb the aisles scavenging for makeshift materials on a budget; we need hydrophobic base materials, a sturdy core, metal edges, glue to hold everything together, and finally a makeshift press to bind the layers. Is this experimental snowboard going to be a blast or a bust? Watch as we test it out on slopes of Utah’s Brighton resort!
