today we're talking about something that many think is not sexy: parenting. this is something that's particularly interesting to me because i want to have kids eventually, so i'm thinking about how i should be preparing myself to be a parent one day. how can i start now? and that's why i'm so excited to be talking to dr. aliza pressman today. she’s a developmental psychologist and host of the podcast, “raising good humans.” her first book comes out in january of 2024, called the five principles of parenting: your essential guide to raising good humans. so i introduce to you, dr. pressman.

apparently, all the cool kids have been discussing what they think is going to be in this year, and what they think is going to be out. normally i find out about these conversations three months late through instagram reels, and in really dark times, youtube shorts. but not this time. emma finally gets to participate in the trendy conversation that's happening. so in this episode, i'm gonna share what i think is going to be in in 2024.

today we're going to be talking to my very own father, michael chamberlain, also known as “chamberlain paintings” on instagram. it's long overdue for me to talk to my dad because i don't think i would have a podcast without him. he's an oil painter, a musician, and he creates youtube videos. he's one of the most creative people i know. you're gonna love him and want him to take over the podcast. so here is a conversation with my wonderful dad, michael chamberlain.

today i have a real treat for you. my mother. my mom and i have a very special relationship. in my older age, i would argue we have a special friendship. she’s definitely one of the girls and today we’re going to hangout. it’s a mother-daughter date and you get to listen in on it. we both love to overshare, so it’s going to be totally fun. so here is my mommy.

a few weeks ago, i was talking to a loved one, and they were talking about how easy it is to make ambient music. i said i wish i knew how to make ambient music, but there's no way i would figure it out. and they were like, emma, it's so easy, you can learn how to do it. and i realized, i have a problem. i have all these poisonous thoughts floating around my head about why i can't teach myself how to make ambient music. and i realized that that was a limiting belief. i've explored the topic of limiting beliefs a little, but i’ve never really dug into it until now. so that’s what we’re going to be discussing today.

today, i'm going to be talking fashion with the only person i wanna talk about fashion with, jared ellner, my stylist and fashion soulmate. i've always been into fashion, and i truly believe that my relationship with jared has allowed me to explore fashion with less of someone who's telling me what to do, and rather a partner in crime. we are true collaborators. i can't wait for you to hang out with jared because, my god, i love hanging out with him. he’s my bestie. so enjoy jared and don't take it for granted because he's a rare fruit.

oh boy. do i have a story for you? yeah, i do. i have a story for you and i can almost promise you that i'm not gonna have another scary story to tell you for a few years because this doesn't happen to me very often. so don't get used to this. this is like a rare treat for all of us. so without further ado, let me walk you through something that happened to me a few days ago.

i had an epiphany recently and it's been really fascinating because it's about a belief that i've had that i wasn't fully conscious of. the subconscious belief that i've carried almost my whole life is that people who are harder to get are better. people who are harder to get can provide more value in my life. this is a belief that if i had spoken it sooner, i would've demolished it sooner because i know in my conscious brain that it’s not true. but for some reason, i've always believed that.

a couple of weeks ago, i made the decision that i was going to get laser hair removal, and i was referred to kristina kitsos. she's so incredibly knowledgeable about all of the popular treatments today, from botox, to filler, to anything you can imagine. kristina is a multi-specialty trained registered nurse with over 15 years of experience working in the field of minimally invasive aesthetic medicine. she's doing the botox and the filler. she's not doing the brazilian butt lift surgery - she's not a plastic surgeon. whether we like it or not, it's the beauty standard nowadays to have botox, to have filler, or to have a facelift. and i find myself constantly confused about where i stand on it. i think today's conversation is gonna help me come to a clearer conclusion and maybe you, too. so i'm very excited to introduce you to kristina kitsos.

this episode is going to come as a shock to many of you because many of you know me as a fashion lover. i recently became obsessed with the idea of dressing in a uniform. my default mode of getting dressed in the morning is putting something new on every day. i've flirted with the idea of a uniform before when i did my series on minimalism a few months back, but at the time it was something that i felt wasn't realistic for me. recently though, there's been a shift in my brain, and i'm taking this idea much more seriously. so let’s discuss the pros and cons of dressing in a uniform.

recently i've been thinking about cringe. i can look at something and be like, that's cringe. i can do something and be like, “emma, that was cringe.” but i rarely ask myself why. i don't think it's possible to completely avoid being cringe, but i feel like understanding what makes something cringe may be beneficial. and also investigating whether or not cringe is always bad. so today, i'm going to be investigating what makes something cringe, and when cringe is bad versus when cringe is maybe good.

i've dabbled in the world of psychedelics a little bit. i've taken mushrooms a few times, but i really don't know a lot about psychedelics. however, it's becoming an increasingly more relevant topic as it's been revealed that they can help with mental health issues and have therapeutic qualities. robin carhart-harris is a pioneer and leading researcher in neuroscience and psychopharmacology, best known for his groundbreaking work on how psychedelics affect the brain and how they can be used to treat mental health issues. in 2019, he founded the world's first center for psychedelic research at imperial college london. basically, he’s all about using psychedelics to help human suffering to improve the quality of people's lives. so today, we're going to learn a new definition of psychedelics with robin carhart-harris.

you know what i love? a metaphor. and my favorite metaphor this week is the lens that we view life through. i'm referring to our perspective, attitude, or general point of view towards life. it's something i'm really working on right now - making sure that i'm looking at life through the best lens possible. so today i'm sharing two major examples of lens shifts that have happened in my life recently, and 3 things i do to keep my lenses in check.

if you're a long-time listener of anything goes, you might remember a little series i used to do called advice session, where i would ask you to submit current challenges and struggles that you're dealing with, and i would take a few of them and give my advice. i think the reason why i stopped doing this series was because i had imposter syndrome about whether or not i had the credentials to give advice. however, i enjoy giving advice and so we're bringing it back. i have the best intentions and i want you to win in life! but still, take everything i say with a grain of salt.

i think it's beneficial to check in every once in a while to figure out the ways that you’re toxic. you can't get through life without being a little bit toxic. now don't feel attacked because we're all a little toxic. if you choose to turn a blind eye to the ways that you're toxic and to the ways that other people are toxic, how are you able to improve and grow? i've decided to make a list of all the ways that i'm currently toxic, and today i'm going to be sharing them with you.

the stanley cup has been a hot topic of conversation now for probably a few months. this cup has taken over the world, probably not the world, but at least america. but the stanley cup is not all sunshine and rainbows. as with all things that go mainstream, people now hate this cup, and what's been said about the stanley cup is that it's cheugy. cheugy is a slang term that describes someone or something as uncool, outdated, or lacking in style and originality. it can also mean someone who is out of touch with current trends or trying too hard to be trendy. and so today, i want to talk about all the things i love that are cheugy.

i came to the conclusion the other day that i need to allow myself to be bored more often. this is not a new conversation for us here on anything goes. i have talked about this before, but i've come to the conclusion again recently that i'm not bored enough. and i know that being bored is important because, through life experience, i've noticed that times of boredom have led me to do incredible things. so today i want to get into why i think boredom is important.

for the past 10 years, i've refused to throw myself a birthday party and this year was no different. i just turned 23 and i made the decision that once again i was not going to throw myself a birthday party. and it's kind of weird because i actually enjoy birthday parties. but my god, do i hate throwing one for myself.

when you're young, birthdays are exciting because it means that you're unlocking new, adult activities. you're unlocking new mature responsibilities. this year, i turned 23 and realized that's over for me. depending on who you are, birthdays after a certain point can become even more exciting or even more daunting. personally, i'm pretty neutral. but i will say that it feels like societally we are afraid of aging. growing up, i saw endless anti-aging commercials - anti-aging facial moisturizers, anti-aging supplements, etc. we've grown up watching people cover up their aging, so i think it makes sense why societally some of us are afraid of it.

this is a very full circle moment because today i'm bringing on the two people i spoke to when i went on my very first podcast, cody ko and kelsey kreppel. cody is the host of the podcast insanely chill, and kelsey hosts the podcast, circle time. they are truly some of my closest friends. cody and kelsey also happen to be married and they recently became parents for the first time. i’m excited to talk to them about parenting because i think a lot about having a child, and i have many questions. so let’s bring them in.

historically, i’ve dressed pretty modestly. however, as i'm getting a bit older and getting more into fashion, i've been experimenting more with revealing clothing. around a month ago, i wore my most revealing look so far. and it's interesting because wearing revealing clothing is something i've always had a mixed opinion about. so today i’m going to talk about my riskiest fashion choice ever.

i've noticed something about myself - in periods of self-reflection, the hardest things for me to address are contradictions and inconsistencies in my personality. and it makes sense why this is so uncomfortable to address. it's because i feel like the consistency between our beliefs and our actions gives us a sense of emotional stability. and when you find a contradiction or an inconsistency, it rattles that piece of our foundation. an inconsistency that i've found within myself recently is that, sometimes, i’m afraid to change my mind. so today, I'm going to discuss why it's okay to change our minds.

if you were to look at a list of all my recurring dilemmas, you wouldn't see anything too out of the ordinary. you'd see the choice between a sweet or savory breakfast, going to bed early or late, putting gas in my car now or later, a lot of mundane shit. and then you'd see, towards the bottom of the list, something a little bit more interesting, a bit more complex, with a bit more nuance: the choice between looking pretty or looking interesting.

when it comes to fashion, i change my mind all the time. one day i might love something, and a year later, i might absolutely despise it. on the other hand, i might hate something and say, 'i will never ever wear that,' only to give it a try two years later. so today, i thought it'd be fun to share how my fashion preferences have changed over the years. i'll talk about things i used to like but now dislike, and things i used to dislike but now like - and we'll discuss why.

recently, i've been struggling with the urge to self-sabotage - to mess everything up. the causes of this self-destructive mindset can vary. sometimes i can fall into it by accident and this can lead to self-destructive behavior. however, over time i’ve worked hard to manage my urges to self-sabotage. and so today i want to share how i personally handle these phases of my life when i'm feeling the pull to self-sabotage.

today i'm sharing with you a list of things that i like right now. i feel like my list of things that i'm enjoying constantly changes because, even though i’m a creature of habit, the little details in my life are always changing. and so i have this ever-evolving list of things I’m into at the moment. but six months from now, I’ll probably be over all of them - you know what i mean? so here’s the list, subject to change, of course.

revenge has been on my mind because i recently was wronged by someone. not in a way that is blatantly, obviously evil. but i do believe that to be human is to at times crave revenge. and look, this doesn't make me look like an angel here, i don’t like saying that out loud. but today i want to talk about revenge.
