In this one I take a look at the fortunes of the Kingdom of Wessex before the time of Alfred the Great and the Great Heathen Army of 865. First of all I'll take a look at King Ecgberht (802-839) who shattered the Mercian Supremacy at the Battle of Ellandun in 825 and cemented West-Saxon control over all the Anglo-Saxon lands south of the Thames. Following this I'll also delve into the reign of his son King Æthelwulf (839-858) and his response to the Viking incursions as well as what information can be gleaned about the nature of the West-Saxon Kingdom and its relationship with Mercia during the time. After the Norman Conquest of 1066 and the installation of William, Duke of Normandy's dynasty as the new kings of England, for the first time in the history of the united kingdom its rulers no longer spoke English. Instead they spoke Norman French, a Romance language that left its mark on Modern English in the form of new vocabulary like pork, beef, castle, captain, forest. But in the new Netflix film "The King", Henry V is shown to be speaking English; and without a French accent. Is this accurate? In 911 AD Charles the Simple, King of West Francia, granted the County of Rouen to a Viking warleader called Rollo (Hrólfr in Old Norse), starting a process that would lead to the formation of the Duchy of Normandy. While Rollo's followers were originally Old Norse-speaking, sea-faring, pagan, Viking Age Scandinavians bent on plunder, within several generations they were unrecognisable, having become French-speaking, Christian feudal overlords. In 911 AD a Viking chief named Rollo (Old Norse Hrólfr) was given as a fief the territory of Normandy in the North of France, the then Western Frankish Kingdom. 155 years later his descendant William would become a king in England starting the Norman Era and leaving a legacy that would shape British and world history. But in terms of those first Scandinavians that came to Northern France in the 10th Century, what language did they speak and how did this influence the development of Modern English that is spoken throughout the world today? While they were originally Old Norse speakers, soon the new "Normans" switched to the local vernacular of Old French, this new blend becoming known as "Old Norman" which retained some interesting features and loaned many words from Old Norse and decisively influenced the English language as we know it. Perhaps the most famous of Africa's tribes, the Zulus rose to prominence under their King Shaka at the start of the 19th Century on the Eastern seaboard of what's now South Africa. In the years following Shaka's death his successors would have encounters with the Boer Voortrekkers and more famously, with the British culminating in the Anglo-Zulu War (1879) where they managed to decisively defeat them at the Battle of Isandlwana before themselves suffering defeat at the now infamous Battle of Rorke's Drift. But in this video I'm not going to be talking about the much more well known story of the British Invasion of Zululand in the later 19th Century and the demise of the Zulu Empire, but rather about its origin and how it came about. In the 18th Century the Zulu as a people had only just become a separate entity, and certainly were not one of the major players on the scene before the time of Shaka. A series of factors played a role in their rise to power around the turn of the 19th Century, most notably the actions of Shaka himself as well as a shift in the way in which warfare was carried about by the tribes of the region and their interactions with European trading networks. At the Battle of Isandlwana in 1879, an army of Zulu warriors armed with cowhide shields and short stabbing spears succeeded in defeating and killing an army of 1,800 British regulars and their allies, armed with the latest European fire arms and artillery. The tactics they employed, the "Horns of the Buffalo" or Impondo Zankomo in isiZulu, owe their existence to the military genius of the man who forged the Zulu Empire in the heat of the African sun: Shaka. His military innovations and reforms included the invention of a new, shorter spear called the Assegai, or more commonly known by its isiZulu nickname: the iKlwa, and that of much larger, thicker shields capable of shielding his warriors when closing on an enemy from range. These inventions suited his tactical style of combat, surrounding an enemy and cutting them down at close quarters instead of the much lighter style that had predominated in African combat before. The Boers were the descendants of Dutch settlers in the Cape of South Africa who during the Great Trek "trekked" inland and founded several Boer Republics. The Zulus were a kingdom that rose to prominence in the early 19th Century under the direction of Shaka Zulu and soon became the greatest military power in Southeast Africa. Perhaps the most gifted general to come out of Scotland in the 17th century, David Leslie is unfortunately a little known Scottish hero who fought for his religion, country, and even at times, his King. David Leslie led the charge for the side of parliament, the famous Covenanters, to many victories against the Royalists in both Scotland and south of the border in England thus taking part in both the Scottish and English Civil War or War of the Three Kingdoms as it's sometimes termed. Before this he served in the Swedish Army of the 17th Century and saw action against the Russians in Polish service during the Smolensk War. So I've decided to move the content on my second channel Vlogs in Clogs through as a section on here on the main channel. So it's basically just a normal video on a theme but outdoors and in a vlog-style whilst I'm walking. Note that no walkers were sneezed on during the making of this production. Today I wanted to talk about the Dream of the Rood, as it was Easter Sunday and the poem is an Old English, Anglo-Saxon one about the crucifixion and the resurrection as well as more broadly some themes on conversion and the Anglo-Saxon conversion from paganism to Christianity and how this might have come about and manifested in the literature of the time. In terms of how long people have inhabited the Americas however, horses are a very recent addition to their cultures, only being introduced by the Spanish expeditions into North America in the 17th Century. With the Great Pueblo Revolt of 1680 whole herds escaped onto the Great Plains and the secret weapon of the Spaniards had been exposed to the Native tribes that lived in its vicinity. Even before this the Apache, Geronimo's ancestors, had been raiding the Pueblo settlements under Spanish protection and had acquired horses for themselves, becoming the first mounted tribe in America's history. Soon more would follow. Most famous of these were the Comanche, Quannah Parker's ancestors, who by all accounts were the most skilled riders as documented by the accounts of the artist George Catlin. By the 18th Century horses had been traded and raided right the way into the northern reaches of the Great Plains in what's now Canada among the Blackfeet Nations who referred to them as "big dogs" and later "elk dogs" as they'd never before encountered such creatures until their Shoshone enemies used them in battle against them. The Last Kingdom Season 4 came out about a week ago and while I did really enjoy this new season and the direction it went in, I have a major bone to pick with the producers regarding the portrayal of Edward the Elder. Edward was the eldest son of Alfred the Great and his wife Ealhswith, and was responsible for the conquest of large parts of the so-called "Danelaw" of Danish controlled East Anglia, Essex and Eastern Mercia during his lifetime. His portrayal in season 4 is of a young man who is both shown as being indecisive whilst then flipping to the other extreme of being rash and reckless towards the end. Furthermore, he is shown as disrespecting and seeking to harm both his mother Ealhswith and Æthelflæd. The historical record of Edward the Elder directly contradicts many of the things shown in the Last Kingdom with regards to his personality and his campaigns against the Danelaw and will be what I look at in this video. Archaeological excavations at Lendbreen have unearthed a host of items at incredibly high elevations dating back to the Viking Age and beyond. The nature of the finds and their volume suggests that these high up palces thought to be impassable were actually highways over which people and goods were being transported from the hinterland to the coastal settlements that connected them with a trading network that stretched out across the North Sea to Anglo-Saxon England and the Carolingian Empire as well as the Baltic and beyond.
