So a few days ago a few members of the public in Birmingham disrupted and shouted down a Morris Dancing Performance, saying it was racist as the members dancing were in blackface. This is following a recent trend, with the Shrewsbury Folk Festival also banning Morris Dancers in the tradition blackface. The Second World War touched every country in Europe, from the nucleus of the storm in Nazi Germany to the frigid tundras of the Soviet Union to the rural communities nestled in the French mountains. But one country seldom talked about in this time is Spain. Spain was at this time just recovering from the incredibly destructive Spanish Civil War (1936 - 1939) upon which the Fascist Francisco Franco became the de-facto leader. Belgium's history of linguistic division is as old as the country itself, the northern half being Dutch or Flemish speaking while the southern half is French or Walloon speaking. And we haven't even got into the German speakers living on Belgium's eastern fringes! The two larger language groups each attempt to rule their own independently having essentially segregated governments for Flanders and Wallonia, however the crisis of 2007 - 2011 showed that while the northern Flemings wanted more decentralisation and autonomy, the southern Walloons were dead set against it. She had to contend with Catholic plots, both homegrown and from abroad, with foreign interventions from Scotland and Mary Queen of Scots, her own cousin, as well as the Spanish and French, the religious extremists of the Jesuits and the Marian Exiles followed by the Puritans on both the Catholic and Protestant side of the ecclesiastical spectrum and finally the issues presented to her following her repeated decisions not to marry and therefore her inability to produce an heir. The Peaky Blinders is a BBC Historical Drama series semi-based on a gang of the same name active on Birmingham's racecourses and streets in the late 1890's, although the Shelby brothers on our screens inhabit the world of the 1920's Black Country. During their various adventures and exploits they make contact with IRA gunmen, helping their comrades back in Ireland who at this time were fighting the British in the Irish War of Independence from 1919 to 1922, Communists from the newly established USSR who were helped by Socialist factory workers yet opposed by royalist White Russians or Russian Emigrés in exile. Even the domestic politics of the time with a whole host of gangs based on ethnic and class lines is fascinating and features Italian Mafia from London and New York, Jewish "bakers" and armies of roving gypsies. Greenland is the largest island on earth not to be counted as a continent in its own right and like many islands in the North Atlantic it was discovered and colonised by Norsemen. After last week's video about how the Norse discovered Iceland, I thought this was the next logical step in a series about Norse expansion westward, culminating in settlements on the North American mainland a generation after the successful colonisation of Greenland which made it possible. It’s Christmastime everyone, as you can tell from the name, it has a lot to do with Christ and Christianity, after all, Jesus was born on the 25th of December, right? Well, not quite. Most of what we do at Christmas time has little or nothing to do with Christianity and is rather rooted in the ancient pagan pasts of both Europe and other places. In this video I’m going to explore the aspects of Christmas that come form the traditions and beliefs of the Northern Europe Germanic or Nordic Pagans as this is what I know the most about and what interests me the most. This isn’t to say there are more explanations for where certain traditions come from or that there were other groups who contributed aspects of our modern Christmas celebrations. Things like Carol Singing, Christmas Trees, Christmas Lights, Yule Logs, Christmas Dinner, Santa Claus, the Elves, New Year’s Resolutions and Kissing under the Mistletoe can all be traced back to the pagan times of our forefathers and to various characters of Norse Myth and Legend like Odin, Freyja, Baldr and Thor. The Germans have their 30 Years War, The Dutch have their 80 Years War and the English and French hated each other so much they even duked it out for the Hundred Year War (although it was actually longer!) But did you know the record for longest war has to go to the Isles of Scilly, off the southwestern coast of Cornwall, who were semi-officially "at war" with the Dutch Republic from 1651 until this terrible violence was finally put to an end in 1985 with the signing of a historic peace treaty between the Netherlands and the Islands.
