Outdoor Nevada

John visits the Ruby Mountains in Elko County where he goes to Lamoille Canyon with Joe from the Nevada Department of Wildlife. From there Joe takes John to fish Angel Lake, a high-altitude glacier lake. John returns to Lamoille Canyon and hikes the area. Here, John meets up with a photographer and author whose focus is rural Nevada.

The town of Beatty is featured in this episode as John learns about the town's history and namesake. While in the area, John visits the ghost town of Rhyolite where he learns about the history and lore of the one-time boomtown. He then takes a tour of Beatty’s abandoned mines and incredible OHV trails.

John visits Spicer’s Ranch, a 900-acre mecca for mountain bike enthusiasts. From there, John visits the 7J Ranch to plant a tree. Not far the from the ranch at the Big Dune Recreation Area, John witnesses the once-a-year occurrence of the mating of the Giuliani Beetle. It’s an amazing sight!

The town of Elko is rich in history, cowboy traditions and art. John visits JM Capriola’s, a local saddle shop specializing in handmade horse and rancher gear. Then he visits the Cowboy Art and Gear Museum to meet with a local historian. From there, John tours Downtown Elko’s murals. Finally, John meets up with a local painter who is inspired by the beauty of the area.

John visits the Desert National Wildlife Refuge. Here he meets up with a US Fish and Wildlife representative to learn about the massive area and all it has to offer. John then travels 36 miles into the refuge to visit the Hidden Forest. There he hikes to the Hidden Cabin and learns from a local biologist and hiker about the life levels of the area.

John visits South Lake Tahoe area. Here he tours Spooner and Marlette lakes. He learns about the hiking trail systems and about the very popular e-bike. From there, John lends the Nevada Department of Wildlife a hand on a trout spawning project.

Carson City is not only our state’s capital, it’s a history buff’s dream. John takes a tour of the Kit Carson Trail and its historic homes. From there, John hikes along the Carson River to the Mexican Dam, learning about the area’s early mining companies. John then visits the Stewart Indian School and learns about the dark yet rich history. It’s a lesson in preserving culture.

John continues his visit to Carson City with a fantastic mountain bike ride on the Ash Canyon Trail with some local riders. Not far from Carson City, John rafts the Truckee River with a local angler in search of trout. After a day of fishing, John hikes to the top of Prison Hill, then wraps up the day with a ride on a rail bike on the VT Railway.

The town of Ely’s newest attraction is a world-class mountain disc golf course. John plays a round with a couple of locals. Then just outside of Ely is a piece of living history, the Pony Express. This legendary form of mail delivery lives on as local cowboys re-ride the actual route. On Route 50, “The Loneliest Highway in America,” John takes on the Middlegate Monster, a 15-pound burger challenge

John takes a tour of a local desert plants. He also learns about the devastation of desert dumping and what it is doing to the local environment and assists with a cleanup. In Henderson, John visits one of its many neighborhood parks and meets up with Lost Coast Longboarding, a married couple who tour the West Coast in search of the perfect land wave.
