The Lateral Line

November and December are one of the best times to go fishing for yellowtail kingfish in New Zealand. Milan and Nato had planned to do as much fishing as possible over this period, however, the weather hasn't played ball. Over this awesome fishing season, the boys had also planned to get Dick Johnson (creator of all The Lateral Line music) and Dayne from Marco Boats (creator of Sojourn) out fishing for a day or two. This fishing mission is all about trying to get a photo of Dayne with a huge kingfish in his arms. A big kingfish is spotted with the drone, can the boys catch it?

The fishing in New Zealand has been red hot over the last couple of months! Milan has hooked and landed more than his fair share of big kingfish, so this time on The Lateral Line the camera man is gonna do the fishing, and Milan will be behind the camera trying to capture the action. It’s not just Nato and Milan on this fishing trip, for the first time ever on The Lateral Line there will be a female angler on board Sojourn! All the tell-tale signs for an amazing day fishing are present even before the boat is on the water but, the fishing starts a little slow. After visiting a number of different spots unsuccessfully and with only an hour left of day light Nato’s stick bait is ripped from the surface by what Nato describes as a “beast of a fish”. That fish then tries to rip Nato off the back of the boat! All he can do is grab the spool to avoid a good old fashion dusting and hope his gear and knots are strong enough to stop the beast. Can Nato land this one?

Towards the end of the last Lateral Line fishing mission, the boys and girls ran into a huge Whale, Dolphin, and dive-bombing Gannet workup. It was a beautiful display of nature doing what nature does best! A massive school of bait tried to shelter from an aerial attack underneath the boat, which led to the GoPro capturing some amazing underwater footage of feeding Dolphins, Yellowtail Kingfish, and the dive-bombing Gannets. BUT it also attracted the attention of a few whales that were unable to detect the boat through the thick bait school. After a Whale bumps into the bow of the boat, it’s time to drive away from the bait to fill the chilly bin and leave the Whales, Dolphins, and Gannets to get their fill of the plentiful bait fish on offer. Alex hooks a solid fish on a light soft bait rod and reel combo. It was pretty entertaining watching her do battle, before finally landing a beautiful fish! Go Alex!

Milan and Alex are off on a fishing adventure to the Chatham Islands visiting brother Toby and his partner Tiffany. Toby accepted the job of Port Manager on the Chatham Islands and invited Milan over to explore the place and do a bit of land-based fishing. Milan has always wanted to visit the Chatham’s, so he didn’t take much convincing! Before Milan left, Nathan handed him the work phone and said, “Please film it. Just talk to the phone in the morning about what the day's plan is, and film stuff as you go. Then talk to the phone again at night about what you did that day and I’ll do the rest.”

In this episode, the boys are taking on one of New Zealand's most secluded and remote areas for an epic land-based fishing mission. Loaded up with heavy packs, Milan and NATO walk for 5 or so hours to reach their destination. But they're not alone on this adventure - 4 other keen land-based fishermen are making the walk in too. With the stunning New Zealand scenery as their backdrop, the boys set up camp for the next two nights, sleeping in tents and cooking on an open fire. The boys are hoping the kingfish and snapper fishing, will be as epic as the scenery. Watch as they cast their lines, battle the fish, and celebrate their catch.

In the latest episode of The Lateral Line, the boys receive an exciting phone call from Gene, from Strictly Land Based Fishing. Gene invites the boys to join him on a land-based fishing mission in Whitianga. Eager to explore new waters land-based fishing, the boys pack up their gear and head out for an adventure. On their first day, the boys do a bit of island hopping, taking in the beautiful scenery and casting their lines in the hopes of catching a big kingfish or a big snapper. On day two there is a huge fishing tournament taking place, with a shotgun start sending 250-plus boats out of the bay at 7:30am! So, the boys decide to avoid the crowds and opt for a good old-fashioned walk-in land-based fishing day. Despite the challenges that come with fishing from the shore, the boys are able to land a few table fish, making the trip a success. After hearing that Hamish from NaCL Lures experienced some incredible land-based fishing at a spot that the boys had fished only weeks earlier, a plan is hatched to head back for an overnight camping and fishing mission. On the first morning, they set out on a decent walk to a spot they've had success at in the past, with the mighty Kingfish at the top of their hit list. After that, they relocate to a spot where they can camp within casting distance of the rocks, where they'll spend the afternoon fishing to catch dinner, before settling in for the night, with the plan to do it all over again the next day. Welcome back to The Lateral Line! In our last epic fishing mission in the stunning landscapes of New Zealand, the boys and girls had a ton of fun soaking up the beautiful scenery, and eating like kings & queens whilst creating some awesome memories. We witnessed Claire reeling in her very first fish, while Alex conquered the rocky shores with her impressive Snapper catch. Talk about making waves! On this episode of The Lateral Line, the boys take land-based fishing to new heights - with a helicopter! It all began with a chat with Reon, a good man from the local gym, who had a couple of adventurous mates with their own helicopter. After some planning and back and forth, the boys decided to land the helicopter on the rocks of Great Barrier Island for a day of epic fishing. The effort was well worth it, as the fishing proved to be amazing! But that's not all - Reon, not only a great organiser, also surprised us with his cooking skills. We enjoyed mouthwatering rotisserie scotch fillet steaks for lunch on the rocks, a true feast for the boys! This fishing mission will be etched in The Lateral Line's history as the most unforgettable and epic fishing mission adventure yet!

On the last episode of The Lateral Line, the boys landed a helicopter on an island in search of the mighty Kingfish. Although the Kingys proved elusive last time, the boys liked what they saw and were eager to return. Round two? You betcha! In the latest installment of The Lateral Line, the boys embark on yet another land-based fishing mission. They are back on familiar ground, but this time, they're revisiting a spot they haven't fished since the very beginning of The Lateral Line over three years ago. Joining the adventure in this episode is Milan's neighbour, brother Richard. Richard has only been land-based fishing a handful of times. One memorable instance involved an impromptu fishing trip with Milan, where Richard's live bait got destroyed by a Great White Shark after he wasn’t quite quick enough to get the mighty Kahawai out of harm’s way! The fishing proves to be as good as any keen angler could hope for, with plenty of catches, providing a hearty supply of food. Milan, in a display of incredible skill, even manages to wrestle a colossal Snapper from the weeds. Go Milan!

After a couple of successful scouting missions confirmed the arrival of springtime Kingfish, Milan and Hamish from NaCL Lures are super keen to head out and target a big fish. Nato, with a hunting permit for his favourite block, receives a phone call the night before with an invite to go and film the boys on their fishing mission. Now, he has a tough choice to make: hunting or fishing? This time on The Lateral Line the boys try something a little bit different with a new fishing approach. They're dipping their toes into the world of slide bait fishing with live baits. Not only are they experimenting with a fishing style that's entirely new to them, but they’re also exploring fresh waters, fishing a couple of spots that they’ve driven past but never stopped to fish. After having some success both at the new spots and with the slide bait technique, the boys are left wondering why they didn't attempt this earlier. The boys have got a new boat - a 4-meter Tinny, the latest creation from Marco Boats. Dayne, the mastermind behind Marco Boats, wanted to create a simple and affordable option, encouraging more individuals to embrace the water and enjoy the wide open spaces. Eager to put the prototype to the test, the boys embarked on its maiden voyage. While initially more of a boat test than a dedicated fishing mission, the results were pretty good. After just a few short hours on the water, a respectable kingfish was successfully brought on board and the boys headed home to enjoy their catch!

In this episode of The Lateral Line, the boys return to the harbour with their new dinghy. The initial outing with the little boat was primarily about acquainting themselves with their new boat rather than a focused fishing mission. However, in just a couple of hours on the water and a stroke of luck, Milan managed to reel in a sizable kingfish. With Christmas approaching and a craving for festive kingfish, Milan sets out to challenge himself, aiming to once again reel in a reasonable kingfish from the dinghy in the harbour.
