On a dreary, rainy day, Graziano Torri calls the police; his wife, Alessandra, who has just told him that she is pregnant, is missing. When Valeria arrives at the woman's home she finds a mysterious and recently dug hole… Guido, Valeria’s brother urges her to stop withdrawing from her family, which once again includes Lucia. After a particularly tense altercation, Lucia understands that her family will never be able to forgive her and that perhaps it would be best for her to disappear.

The body of a twenty-two-year-old women is found on the banks of the Po. Her name was Stefania and she worked in a nearby Benedictine monastery. Without overlooking the obvious trail that leads to the halls of the monastery, Valeria questions Stefania's lover, Michele. In addition to trying to discover who murdered Stefania, Valeria also must figure out where her mother is. Valeria, locates Lucia, at the home of Monica, Lucia's former cell mate. A young Egyptian woman, Amina Mansour, is found dying in the hammam where she works after having been attacked with a knife. Amina has an Italian boyfriend and dresses in western clothes, it occurs to Valeria that this may not be taken very well by her family which is still extremely anchored in tradition. An ordinary administrative case: a man has been run over on the highway by a hit-and-run driver. There would be no need for Valeria, but Inspector Ferro understands right from the start that things aren't as simple as they seem.
The investigation is also a chance for her to get away from her family: the last altercation with her mother has left her disappointed and bitter and she wants nothing to do with her anymore. But, after making peace with Lombardi, Valeria returns home to her uncle Giulio, the man who raised her like a daughter.

Giampaolo Petrone, the openly gay owner of a nightclub, is found dead. The man was not in close contact with his family, who had never accepted the fact that he was gay, and so Inspector Ferro begins questioning his circle of friends and acquaintances. Valeria wants to solve the case and submit a transfer request. When her uncle Giulio finds out he is shaken and confides in Lucia who, on the other hand, seems happy about her daughter's decision. On the night that she was killed, Irene played her final concert. First violin in an orchestra and the daughter of Adele Rubini, the owner of a prestigious theatre, she was a talented and beautiful young woman. The entire Rocchi family is found dead in a hillside villa and all evidence points to a terrible case of homicide-suicide engineered by Sandro, the head of the family.
