Malo is hired to rescue two explorers on EM 451, a newly discovered planet with a high surface temperature. Malo notices that some "fireflies" have come aboard the Starduke. Gradually, the insects spread to other ships the Starduke meets, Unless Malo can come up with a plan to stop them, they will destroy the Starduke and many other Tracer ships.
