COVID-19 or the Coronavirus as it's often referred to has dominated the world's news for over a month now and has, or soon will have, a dramatic effect on our daily lives. And yes this is not the only time the world has been struck with a virus of this type. SARS (South Asian Respiratory Syndrome) broke out in 2003 in Southern China as a result of close contact with civet cats who had been infected with a strain of coronavirus by bats. MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) erupted in the Arabian Peninsula in 2012 and soon there were cases in multiple countries, this time caused by transmission from camels who were once again infected by bats.
