Rhätische Bahn Part 2. We continue by taking the Arosa Bahn. Interesting is the famous stretch along the banks of the Rhine, also known as the Swiss Grand Canyon, from 1903. Remarkable is the Vereina tunnel, the longest narrow gauge railway tunnel.

The Brig-Visp-Zermatt Bahn. A train journey from the banks of the Rhône to the top of the Gornergrat mountain. The Tauern Bahn. From Salzburg the train travels through the Gasteiner valley to the Tauerntunnel, a climb of more than 600 metres through narrow valleys, tunnels, and over viaducts. After the 8 kilometre long tunnel the tracks descend until it reaches the shores of the Wörther See and Klagenfurt, the capital of Carinthia.

This episode is about the narrow gauge railway of the Furka Oberalp. We make our way through the snow from Disentis, passed wellknown ski resorts to Brig.

We start in the port of the city Trondheim and we head inland to Dombas, using one of the oldest railway lines of the country. We continue our journey to the coast of Andalsnes and by doing so we climb across the plaines and descend towards the fjords.

We reizen per Arriva-trein van Zutphen via Vorden en Ruurlo naar Winterswijk in de Gelderse Achterhoek. Het traject tussen Zutphen en Winterswijk werd onder meer aangelegd ten behoeve van beter transport voor de textielindustrie. Vanuit Duitsland werd over deze lijn ook steenkool naar Nederland vervoerd. Strenge vorst en sneeuw zijn in Nederland - met het drukste spoorsysteem van Europa - altijd een extra uitdaging. Daarom staat op station Ruurlo een onderhoudsploeg van Asset Rail klaar om met branders en bladblazers de wissels sneeuw- en ijsvrij te maken.

De reis begint in de Sardijnse hoofdstad Cagliari, waarvandaan we noordwaarts naar het stadje Mandas reizen. Daar stappen we over op het 'groene' toeristentreintje. De passagiers maken zich op voor een tocht van ettelijke uren door een ongerept landschap, voordat ze aankomen op het station van de kustplaats Arbatax. Onderweg brengen we een bezoek het verlaten spookdorp Gairo en het plaatsje Seulo. Dat ligt in wat een 'blue zone' heet, een gebied waar de inwoners langer leven en gezonder oud worden. Een van hen is Giovanni, die ons te voet meeneemt door de bergen naar wat de Sardiniërs 'hun eigen hoekje van het paradijs' noemen.

Het eerste deel van de spoorroute begint in de deelstaat Opper-Oostenrijk, iets ten noordwesten van Gmunden, in het dorp Ampflwang im Hausruckwald, waar we aan boord gaan van een stoomtrein. Het spoor en de stoomtrein zijn eigendom van de ÖGEG, de Oostenrijkse Vereniging voor Spoorweggeschiedenis. Die renoveert met vele vrijwilligers oude treinen, onderhoudt het spoor, voert de dienstregeling uit en zorgt dat de passagiers een reisgevoel uit een ander tijdperk kunnen beleven. Met de Vorchdorferbahn en de Traunseetram eindigt deze reis pal aan de Traunsee in Gmunden, een gezellig plaatsje, omgeven door meren, valleien en bergen.

We doorkruisen Noorwegen per trein van oost naar west. De bouw van de Bergensbanen (tussen Oslo en Bergen) nam dertig jaar in beslag; de onherbergzame natuur maakte dat er talloze bruggen en tunnels moesten worden aangelegd. Maar het resultaat mag er zijn: al ruim honderd jaar genieten dagelijks duizenden mensen van prachtige vergezichten over valleien, dorpen, bergen, rivieren en fjorden. Ook maken we een rit met de Flåmsbana, een treinreis die geldt als een van de mooiste ter wereld. De route begint in een zomers Oslo, waar de zon nauwelijks ondergaat. Hoe verder de reis vordert, hoe meer het landschap verandert.

Om vanuit Flåm het station van Myrdal te bereiken, reizen we eerst met een volledig elektrische ferry over het Sognefjord, met een lengte van 200 kilometer het langste fjord van Noorwegen. In Myrdal stappen we op de trein naar Bergen. De bouw van de hele lijn van Oslo tot Bergen nam dertig jaar in beslag. In Bergen aangekomen stappen we op de Fløibanen, een kabelspoorlijn die in 2022 helemaal vernieuwd werd. In een paar minuten zijn de reizigers boven, waar een prachtig panorama over Bergen en omgeving wacht.

We reizen stroomafwaarts langs de Loire van Orléans via Nantes naar Le Croisic aan de Atlantische kust. De trein leent zich uitstekend voor het verkennen van de Loirevallei. In Nantes stappen we over voor het laatste deel van de route naar de zee. Een treinrit door zoutbekkens, waar zout wordt gewonnen uit zeewater. Het eindpunt Le Croisic is een pittoresk stadje aan de kust.

Via paardenspoor en stoomtrein belanden we in de 21e eeuw, waar we met de steilste tandradbaan van Oostenrijk, de Schafbergbahn, naar de top van de gelijknamige berg reizen. De reis begint in de deelstaat Opper-Oostenrijk, aan de grens met Tsjechië. Voor de komst van de stoomtrein vond het transport plaats via een paardenspoorlijn: de Pferdeeisenbahn. De derde spoorroute is een van de mooiste van Oostenrijk: de Schafbergbahn. De Schafbergbahn is de steilste tandradbaan in Oostenrijk. Eenmaal boven begrijp je waarom elk jaar ruim 300.000 mensen naar Sankt Wolfgang komen voor een ritje met deze trein.

Deze treinreis voert ons over het groene eiland Ierland, vol ongerepte natuur, mythes, historische schatten, kastelen en legenden. Een reis die begint rond Waterford, de oudste stad van het land, en eindigt bij de kliffen van Moher aan de Atlantische Oceaan.

Krakau is een van de mooiste steden van Polen. In het verleden was de stad de zetel van de Poolse koningen, tegenwoordig is het de meest bezochte stad van het land. Krakau is ook het beginpunt van een treinreis naar Krynica-Zdrój, de plek waar in 1937 prinses Juliana en prins Bernhard een deel van hun wittebroodsweken doorbrachten.

We gaan op stap met twee bijzondere toeristische treinen in een relatief onbekend deel van Frankrijk: de regio's Loire en Haute-Loire in het zuidoostelijke deel van de Auvergne. Ook wel genoemd: 'la belle inconnue', oftewel het mooie onbekende.
