Mezentsev, long associated with crime and having an illegal gold mine, decides to use the information personally for himself. Realizing this, Bronnikov Sr. refuses to tell where the gold mine is. Unable to withstand the torture, he dies of a heart attack. Now Mezentsev’s only hope of finding gold is that his father managed to tell his son about it. Suspecting something was wrong, Sergey writes a letter to his old friend Stanislav Sheremet, FSB lieutenant colonel.

The letter should be taken to Moscow by Dasha, a recent acquaintance of Sergei, who is traveling to the capital on the affairs of Sister Arina. Worried about the fate of a friend, Sheremet flies to Kamnegorsk, where he is informed that Sergey is in prison. Investigators are hinting to Sheremet that it would be better for him not to meddle in this matter, but Sheremet is determined. Then Mezentsev and Lieutenant Colonel Kazarin, the head of the local police department, organize a "setup", having drunk Sheremet with cognac and sleeping pills. Sergei Bronnikov is on the ship, which carries him and other prisoners deep into the taiga. At the first opportunity, he escapes from the ship. The investigators with whom he spoke earlier turned out to be bandits. It was on the instructions of the Mezentsev that Dasha made an escape to Sheremet and was supposed to lead him into the taiga. But after the news of the death of Sergei Dasha changes his assessment. Sheremet explains to Andrey that he needs to know why his father ordered the murder of Sergey Bronnikov, and why he was framed, Sheremet.
