Charlie explains growing up in the Great Depression and his early fascination with the Depression Era Gangsters such as John Dillinger and "Pretty Boy" Floyd. He describes his childhood as part of a "road family" without a permanent home which involved scavenging at the city dump to find meals. Extreme poverty and hunger shapes his world view and sets him on a path of stealing and violence.
