"It was like a movie. I had thought twins, but three!" Maria is three months pregnant and on her way home from a scan with boyfriend Anders. Tears are flowing in a mix of shock, fear and happiness, and Anders is completely quiet. They're expecting triplets. "Everything changes now", she states. "The life we had imagined becomes completely different.". On the island of Fyn, Ida is also pregnant. With her husband Martin, they have three children aged 2, 4 and 6 years old - and now three more babies are being added to the family - all at once. "Do we even have enough love and time for six children", wonders Martin. Ahead of them all is a period of expectation, uncertainty and fear. Beyond the joy of three babies, a triplet birth is high risk. For both mother and children. Will all three babies survive?

The risk of early birth is high with triplet pregnancies, so Maria hopes she can make it to at least week 28. Ida and Martin are not that lucky. Their worst nightmare becomes reality when their triplets make their entrance into the world 12 weeks too early. For Debbie and David, life with their three 1-year-olds is trudging along. They work in shifts to make every day work and see very little of each other.

20 doctors and nurses are ready in the delivery room to make sure Maria and the babies make it through the risky c-section. Debbie and David take 18-month-old Theo, who struggles to walk, to a physiotherapist. Ida and Martin's prematurely born triplets are discharged from the hospital, but with three babies, Ida is breastfeeding 24 hours a day, and with other small children in the house, both parents have enough to keep their hands busy.

Anders and Maria have brought the triplets home and now they quickly have to learn how to take care of three babies at once. Debbie and David have taken the triplets to checkups over fifty times since they were born. Both them and Ida and Martin are feeling stressed about the many trips to the hospital.

Maria is tired of her body not having gone back to normal after the triplets' birth, so she starts exercising. Maria's abdominal muscles have separated to each side while she carried the three babies, and you can make out Maria's intestines underneath her skin. Ida and Martin are visited by an ergotherapist and a physiotherapist. Scarlet has shown signs of cerebral palsy and the physiotherapist will monitor her development. Anders and Maria's joint paternity/maternity leave is over, now they have to make the days work with one parent at work and one parent alone with the triplets.

Ida and Martin's triplets turn 1 year old. The birthday will be celebrated, but the experience of how the triplets entered the world has left a deep impact on both Ida and Martin. They choose to show photographs from the birth so the guests can get an idea of how small the triplets were when they were born, and what a turbulent time it was for the family. At Anders and Maria's place, the triplets have started to make more noise and mess, and this frustrates big brother Michael. He fights for attention by shouting and sometimes pinching his little siblings. They won't have any more children, so Anders is having a vasectomy. Over at Debbie and David's, there's also a birthday taking place. The triplets are turning two, and to the joy of their parents, all three triplets have started to walk.
