Hydrogen Balloon Explosion - part of our "Berzelius Day" uploading 24 videos in 24 hours. Full video containing this reaction at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rdmpx39PRk
NOTE FROM THE PROFESSOR: The main reaction is quite simple. 2H2 + O2 → 2H2O. However, the balloon is made from rubber, which is a complex molecule containing principally containing carbon and hydrogen. The heat of the hydrogen burning probably sets fire to the rubber generating CO2 and water. The orange colour probably comes from the burning rubber.

Potassium Permanganate Colour Change - part of our "Berzelius Day" uploading 24 videos in 24 hours. Full video containing this reaction at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLUyeCC-2Ko
NOTE FROM THE PROFESSOR: The colour change is caused by the purple permanaganate ions [MnO4]- gaining electrons to form colourless Mn(+2) ions. The oxygen from the permanganate and the H2O2 are converted to H2O and O2 (which bubbles off). The extra H atoms come from the sulphuric acid H2SO4. Both the K and Mn end up as sulfates.

NOTE FROM THE PROFESSOR: Aqua Regia is a really complicated mixture. The key point is that together HCl and HNO3 are more effective oxidizing agents than they are individually because they react together to form a variety of ions. These can then react with the gold, enabling it to lose electrons to form bonds with chlorine. The result is a solution a mixture of ions with different ratios of Au to Cl atoms. I still find the dissolving of gold a magical reaction to watch.

NOTE FROM THE PROFESSOR: Calcium carbide reacts with water to form acetylene (also known as ethyne) and Calcium hydroxide. The fact that the water is present as ice doesn't matter. NOTE FROM THE PROFESSOR: This reaction converts a blue solution of CuSO4 to a red precipitate of Cuprous oxide Cu2O. Therefore, there are not enough anions in the solution for both the Cu and K to exist as salts and the Cu is converted into its oxide

NOTE FROM THE PROFESSOR: This reaction is the same as that of K with water, 2K + 2H2O → 2KOH + H2. The difference is that diethyl ether floats on the surface of the water (it's less dense) and it has a very low boiling point so it's vapour easily catches fire to form CO2 and more H2O. Once it's burning, some of the K is vapourized and gives the flame a lilac colour.

Fluorine Gas and Sulfur - part of our "Berzelius Day" uploading 24 videos in 24 hours. Full video containing this reaction at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtWp45Eewtw
NOTE FROM THE PROFESSOR: This is a very violent reaction so many things may be going on. In the molecular structure of solid sulfur, one finds S8 rings. At the simplest level, these react to form SF6; S8 + 48F2 → 8SF6. However, this reaction is involves a jet of F2 gas so there may not be enough fluorine and some SF4 may be formed. SF4 can react violently with water in the air to form SO2 and HF. In addition, the reaction heats the sulfur causing it to melt and the S8 molecules to break up forming longer chains of sulfur atoms which have a brownish colour. This hot sulfur can also react with O2 in the air to burn to form SO2.

NOTE FROM THE PROFESSOR: 13. This is another dirty reaction. The simple explanation is that Copper chloride reacts with Al to make Cu plus aluminium chloride. And you can see the reddish colour of the metallic copper at the end. The reason that it's complicated is that Al chloride (Al2Cl6) can itself react with water to make Al2O3 plus HCl and the HCl can then react with the cupcake case

Magnesium Burns in Carbon Dioxide - part of our "Berzelius Day" uploading 24 videos in 24 hours. Full video containing this reaction at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dSMzg0UPPo
NOTE FROM THE PROFESSOR: The Mg effectively extracts the oxygen from CO2. 2Mg + CO2 → 2MgO + 2C. Solid CO2 and MgO are both white but elemental Carbon is black. The reason why the reaction is so violent is that solid CO2 contains molecules of CO2 which interact weakly while solid MgO is made up of Mg(2+) and O(2-) ions which because of their charges interact very strongly giving out large amounts of energy as the solid MgO is formed.

NOTE FROM THE PROFESSOR: This is the reaction of aniline, C6H5NH2, with N2O4. The products are N2, H2O and CO2. The reaction is violent because N2O4 has a very weak N-N single bond while N2 has a very strong N-N triple bond. The formation of C=O bonds in CO2 releases further energy. NOTE FROM THE PROFESSOR: Potassium always seems to react particularly violently; 2K + 2H2O → 2KOH + H2. It may just be that we use bigger lumps of it or perhaps the melting point is just right for the metal to begin melting when the reaction is already going strongly.

NOTE FROM THE PROFESSOR: 4. The basic mixture is carbon disulfide CS2 plus nitrous oxide, N2O. The N2O decomposes and 2N2O → 2N2 + O2. This reaction needs heat to get it going but is then quite violent. The O2 Reacts with CS2 to make a mixture of CO2, SO2 and solid sulfur. Some of the sulfur and SO2 are formed in a so-called excited state (with a big excess of energy) and the energy is lost by emission of blue light.

NOTE FROM THE PROFESSOR: This is again a complex reaction. On the simplest level F2 reacts with C for form CF4, the fluorine analogue of methane, CH4. However, the carbon gets very hot and probably some of it burns in air to make CO2. Also at these high temperatures other C/F compounds such as C2F6 as probably formed.

NOTE FROM THE PROFESSOR: If you heat salts in a bunsen flame you varpourize some of the metal ions, in this case Calcium and some of the atoms have excess energy which they emit as light at particular wavelengths characteristic of that element. For Calcium this light is red but, as Debbie says, her sample of CaCl2 may have had some traces of NaCl in it. Na gives off yellow/orange light (you can see it in some street lamps) and Na is more volatile than Ca so even a little in her sample could nearly swamp the colour of the calcium in the flame.

NOTE FROM THE PROFESSOR: This reaction is a big mess, which is why it looks so funny. The underlying chemistry is hydrolysis (reaction of an organic compound with water) which is catalysed by the acid. The starch in the bun is hydrolysed to make first sugars (such a glucose) and then a complicated mixture of breakdown products. The fats in the cheese and the meat are probably hydrolysed too. The physical structure of the meat will be destroyed and some of the proteins will be denatured (their folding is disrupted) if not actually broken down. In the end, it's probably better just to enjoy the reaction than to worry too much about the chemistry. Just have fun!!

Since filming, Prof Pines has informed me the huge device we filmed was in fact THE ACTUAL electromagnet used by Lawrence (not a replica)... And in the hurly burly of filming, he apologises for saying oscillating "magnetic" fields when in fact he meant oscillating "electric" fields! Even famous Profs say the wrong thing sometimes!
