Lépine prepares to leave the Prefecture and Louise forms an alliance with Hector, the Prefect's private secretary, to make him give up his resignation. Jouin's investigation into the dead man in the woods and his hostility following the Rosalie Dantremont affair force the vice police to react: Inspector Guichard comes to arrest Jouin, accusing him of being an "invert".
Jouin asks Fiersi for help in breaking into the Bagatelle castle. Meanwhile, Cochefert tracks down Dr. Verlot and realizes that he is working with the vice squad in this vast blackmail operation that allows them to hold all of Paris in their power.
