A woman is found murdered and naked in a back alley known for prostitution. Detective Murdoch discovers that the woman was actually a housemaid of a prominent family. When Dr. Ogden informs him that the girl was pregnant and had been drugged Detective Murdoch is ever more convinced the girl's death was not an accident.
When Detective Murdoch's friend and protege, Constable Oliver Wicken, is found shot to death in the basement of an abandoned house, the constabulary decide it was suicide. Murdoch is determined to prove it was murder and clear Wicken's name.
