Looney Tunes Golden Collection: Volume 1

Elmer, riding in his old jalopy, makes his way to Jellostone National Park looking forward to rest and relaxation. Elmer pitches a tent (near Bugs Bunny's rabbit hole), and sets up camp by putting a fire stove, a mirror and a table to wash his face, and a hammock. However, he gets annoyed when Bugs unpitches and takes his tent, but gets it back, tied up in knots. Bugs welcomes Elmer to Jellostone then he pulls Elmer's hat over his eyes. When Elmer reaches into the hole to grab Bugs, Bugs ties up his fingers. He tries to prevent Bugs from getting out of his hole by hammering a board, saying that he can't get out of that. However, Bugs does get out of that, and mimics Elmer's weight and what he previously said, labeling it "phooey". Elmer lies down in his hammock and soon falls fast asleep, muttering to himself.

A baseball game is going on in New York City, at the Polo Grounds (although the rooftop facade is more suggestive of Yankee Stadium), between the visiting "Gas-House Gorillas" and the home team, the "Tea Totallers".

This cartoon begins as Bugs Bunny once again gets lost when he is tunneling to his vacation spot. He accidentally ends up in Scotland, instead of the La Brea Tar Pits. Upon his arrival, he tells himself that, like always, he "knew I should have made that left toin at Albahkoiky!" and mistakes a Scotsman named Angus MacRory dressed in traditional clothes and playing the bagpipes for a lady being attacked by a "horrible monster". Bugs Bunny jumps MacRory trying to rescue the "woman", and in the process he smashes his bagpipes into little pieces. MacRory becomes enraged that his bagpipes have been absolutely ruined and the angered MacRory threatens Bugs, who discovers that MacRory is actually a man, to which MacRory responds "Certain I'm a man! And what's wrrrong with that?!" to which Bugs responds "What's wrong?!" and then tells the audience "'What's wrong' he says." and then points out that MacRory can't wear a kilt (since it's obviously mistaken for a skirt) making it "indecent". MacRory is confused about the situation until Bugs comes back with a barrel and puts it on MacRory:"It ain't got no two pair o' pants, but it'll do till you get home." Bugs then asks MacRory for the directions to the "La Brea Tar Pits in Los Ahn-galays", confusing MacRory even further until he runs home and gets a blunderbuss and points out "There are no La Brrrea Tarrr Pits in Scotland!!". When Bugs realizes the location he is in, he bids MacRory "Eh, what's up, MacDoc?" and runs for it just as MacRory shoots and chases after the bullet and reveals to the audience "It's been in the family for yearrs." and shoots at Bugs, who dives back into his hole and comes back out disguised as an old Scotsman accusing MacRory of "poachin' on my prrroperty!", MacRory tells him "Yon bunny rrrabbit dinna (which means "don't" in the Scots language) belong to you!" and challenges him to a traditional Scottish duel—a game of golf (Bugs at first wanted to play a card game, and when corrected, asks MacRory if he ever "gets tired of running them 18 bases"). Of course, throughout the game of golf Bugs Bunny manages to outsmart MacRory (for example, when Bugs says he got 2 points MacRoy yells "TWO? FIFTY-FIVE!" and an auction ensues until he gives bugs one point as his "final offer"), and eventually wins, much to the Scotsman's wrath. MacRory accepts defeat after Bugs clears himself of cheating, but still claims that he can't be beaten when it comes to playing bagpipes. After playing, he dares Bugs to "Trry and top that!" which the rabbit does by literally dressing like a Scot and in the manner of a one-man band, manages to not only play the bagpipes, but also a trombone, saxophone, trumpet, two clarinets, cymbals on his feet, and a bass drum with his ears. Bugs takes one last glimpse at the audience before an iris-out.

Bugs Bunny is drumming up business for a vaudeville show in a remote western town (notably one of the posters in the background is for "Frizby the Magician", a reference to director Friz Freleng). One of the main attractions is 'Fearless Freep' and his high-dive act. As soon as Yosemite Sam hears the name 'Fearless Freep', he goes into a frenzy, buying as many tickets as he can. (I'm a-splurgin'!)

Bugs is happily minding his own business, playing a banjo and singing "A Rainy Night in Rio." Nearby, an opera singer named Giovanni Jones (his name perhaps a play on that of director Chuck Jones) rehearses "Largo al Factotum" from The Barber of Seville. Overhearing Bugs, he absent-mindedly finds himself singing along, and loses his temper over his rehearsal being interrupted in this manner. Giovanni angrily confronts Bugs and breaks the banjo strings and the banjo itself in half, crushing the neck and then slamming the body over Bugs' head

Needing to get away from hunters, Bugs digs a tunnel and accidentally winds up in Sing Song Prison (a clear reference to Sing Sing Prison; "No Hanging Around"). As he tries walking away, prison guard (later a prisoner) Yosemite Sam (here called Sam Schultz, presumably as a character role, possibly a reference to Dutch Schultz) beats Bugs with a billy club, telling him, "Trying to pull an escape, 777174, huh?" To which Bugs replies, "I'm not 777174 - I'm only 3½." Sam finds this fine, and soon Bugs is in a prison uniform, breaking rocks, with the prison number "3½" (as Bugs says, "Eh, my mother told me there'd be days like this.")

The story begins when Bugs, while relaxing at his pool, gets a call from a local reporter stating that the public demands his life story. Bugs then proceeds to recount his rise to fame over the phone.

The cartoon opens with people filing in to see "The Barber of Seville". In the back of the theater, Bugs is chased by Elmer and runs through an open back door. Elmer, now behind the curtain, doesn't see it rise when Bugs raises the curtain. The conductor, after a brief confused look at his watch, shrugs, then starts the orchestra, which causes Elmer to turn wide-eyed towards the audience. Bugs then steps out from behind a stage door, dressed in a barber's outfit, and ropes Elmer into getting a shave, rendering him "nice and clean" at the expense of the integrity of Elmer's facial features ("although your face looks like it might have gone through a machine").

Yosemite Sam is running for mayor of a small town, declaring such empty promises as: "There's enough fresh air and sunshine in this great country of ours for everybody- and I'll see to it, that you'll get your share!". Bugs Bunny is underneath the podium drinking carrot juice when Sam makes a pledge to make good on his previous promise "to rid this country of every last rabbit" if elected. Bugs then decides he needs to fight against Sam by running against him for mayor.

At Colonel Korny's World Famous Circus, Bruno the "Slobokian Acrobatic Bear" is the star of the show. But when the Colonel gets a phone call about Bugs Bunny's talents, he agrees to put him on stage with Bruno - which Bruno shows his disgust for by spitting into a corner.

Much like in Hair-Raising Hare, Bugs (after being flooded out of his rabbit hole while sleeping during a heavy rain) finds himself trapped in the castle of an "evil scientist" (the neon sign outside his castle says so, punctuated with a second flashing line, "BOO"), who this time is a caricature of Vincent Price and needs the rabbit's brain to complete an experiment. When Bugs makes a run for it (after encountering the scientist-"Eh, eh, eh, w-w-what's up, doc?", a sarcophagus-"What's going on around here?" and the robot experiment-"Where am I anyway?"), a big red monster wearing a pair of sneakers (Gossamer, here called "Rudolph") is sent out to retrieve him, with the promise of being rewarded with a spider goulash.

The cartoon finds a row of signs saying it's rabbit season ("If you're looking for fun, you don't need a reason. All you need is a gun, it's Rabbit Season!"). Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck again are arguing over which of them is “in season” (it is really Duck Season, as Daffy says in the beginning), while a befuddled Elmer Fudd tries to figure out which animal is telling the truth. Between using sneaky plays-on-words, and dressing himself in women's clothing (including a Lana Turner-style sweater), Bugs manages to escape unscathed, while Daffy repeatedly has his beak blown off, upside-down, and sideways by Elmer.

A cute little bunny named Shorty with a barely discernible warp-speed high pitched voice (a la Alvin and the Chipmunks) is running from Pete Puma, until he stumbles down Bugs Bunny's rabbit hole. The little guy tells Bugs his problem ("My heart pounded, my legs trembled, I was frozen with fear"), and Bugs agrees to help him out. Bugs then proceeds to play tricks on Pete. First, he leaves a stick of dynamite with fake rabbit ears, fake rabbit feet, and a fake rabbit tail. Pete feels them, takes the dynamite stick and is blown up. Second, he asks Pete to stay for tea. He then holds up the sugar bowl and asks the puma how many lumps he wants, to which Pete Puma replies "Oh, three or four". Bugs repeatedly hits Pete Puma on the head with a wooden mallet, leaving him with 5 lumps on his head (Bugs then decides he gave him "one lump too many", flattening it with a reflex hammer). Pete had also offered Bugs an exploding cigar, and while Pete is dazed, Bugs puts the cigar in Pete's mouth and lights it.

On his way to the Coachella Valley for the "big carrot festival, therein," Bugs Bunny gets lost, and wanders into a bullring in the middle of a bullfight between Toro the bull and a very nervous matador. Bugs famously declares he "shoulda make a left toin at Albuqoique". As he asks the matador for directions, the matador escapes into the stands, leaving Bugs to fend for himself against Toro. After irritating Bugs and getting a slap for "steaming up my tail," Toro chalks up the points of his horns like a pool cue and rams the rabbit out of the bullring. As he sails into the air, Bugs mutters his famous line from Groucho Marx: "Of course you realize, dis means war".
