Solomon is a newspaper man who sold his paper 10 years earlier and has been drunk ever since. His letters to his sister Agnes in the East have been lies about his success and wealth. When she writes that she and her grown daughter Louise are coming to visit him, Solomon talks with his friend and current owner of the newspaper who has never married because he has always loved Agnes even though she married another. The newspaper owner cannot let Solomon break Agnes's heart with his wasted situation so he meets the ladies himself along with his assistant (who admired Solomon for Solomon's earlier work), and after learning that Agnes is widowed, tells the women that Solomon is out of town on business and could be weeks getting back. When Agnes says they will just stay in Solomon's suite until his return, the newspaper owner must make arrangements and complete work on making Solomon presentable. New clothes and instructions to act as owner and editor of the paper until the ladies leave proves impossible when the young assistant who is supposed to watch and keep Solomon sober is instructed by Solomon to take the day off to entertain his niece who is smitten with the young man. One of Solomon's biggest stories had been about gold hidden in the Rainbow caves. The young people explore the caves, get lost, and Solomon gets drunk. The owner and Agnes spend the day getting re-acquainted. During the day, he tells her he still wants her and she reveals that she has come to her brother because she was left with nothing and needs Solomon's help. When the couple return to see Solomon, they find him drunk and the young people four hours late. No one knows the caves better than Solomon, so the older couple sober him up on the way out of town, he does find the young people, the young man had found the gold. At this point, Solomon wants to write the story about the discovery and is ready to help his sister and niece because someone finally needs him and he has something to live for.
