Cracking Crime - The Cold Cases

Some of the most high-profile Irish murder cases in recent years, beginning with the killing of mother-of-three Irene White, who was stabbed to death in the kitchen of her home in 2005 after completing the school run. Investigators found no sign of forced entry or robbery, and believe it was a well-planned crime.

The case of taxi driver and mother-of-two Eileen O'Shaughnessy, who was murdered on November 30, 1997. After sending her last radio message at approximately 8pm, her abandoned vehicle was found with a blood-spattered driver's seat, and her body was discovered 15 hours later in Tinker's Lane, Claregalway. The programme reconstructs Eileen's final hours, in an attempt to prompt people who may know more about the crime to contact the Gardai in confidence.

The case of Antoinette Smith, who disappeared in July 1987 after attending a David Bowie concert at Slane Castle, Co Meath. Nine months later her body was found by a family walking through Killakee woods in the Dublin mountains, and a taxi driver subsequently gave an account of a woman fitting her description travelling in his vehicle to the outskirts of Rathfarnham village with two men.

The murder of Lorcan O'Byrne in October 1981. He had announced his engagement and was celebrating with his family when two raiders burst into the premises above the pub and shot him at close range. Only one man was tried for manslaughter.
