Jean and Servier intend to take advantage of the arrest of Antoine and Suzanne to negotiate with the resistance fighters and the Departmental Committee for the Liberation (C.D.L.) certain guarantees of protection. Daniel, assisted by Lucienne, treats the wounded of the German unit taking refuge at the school, in order to save his skin and that of Gustave. During this time, De Kervern, the new prefect, tried as best he could to enforce the authority of the Provisional Government among the resistance fighters and the C.D.L. The challenge: drive out the last Germans and take control of Villeneuve.
To save his life and that of Gustave, Daniel, assisted by Lucienne, treats the German wounded who have taken refuge in the school. The new Prefect tries, sometimes in vain, to have the provisional government's authority respected by the resistance.
