By an explosion of a boat in Lake Constance, a fisherman is burned alive. When the boat is recoverd, the police find the eerie mask of a Celtic deity and a cryptic message in a strange, elusive language. Because of this transborder case, chief inspector Micha Oberländer (Matthias Koeberlin) from Lindau and inspector Hannah Zeiler (Nora Waldstätten) from Bregenz have to work together.The two detectives could not be any more different, but they are forced to come to an arrangement. The first lead brings Zeiler and Oberländer to the brother of the deceased, Ludwig Pfeilschifter (Stephan Kampwirth). He and his wife Christ (Doris Schretzmayer) found three Celtic masks in a nearby mountain crevice fifteen years ago. Then, a second victim is found: Christas father Walter (Karl Fischer) is found slashed and hung to a tree with the second mask. The time for Zeiler and Oberländer is running out, as they have to prevent the murder with the third mask.

In the cabin the walls are smeared with blood and a human arm is found nearby. Also the Doberman of the forester is missing. Austrian detective Hannah Zeiler (Nora Waldstätten) and her German colleague Micha Oberländer (Matthias Koeberlin) are called to this crime scene to work on their new cross-border case. The dead body of a woman, who turns out to be schoolteacher Julia Niermeye, has been caught in a fisherman's net in Lake Constance. Hannah Zeiler (Nora Waldstätten) and her German colleague Micha Oberänder (Matthias Koeberlin) are called to the crime scene. First it seems to be only a tragic swimming accident but the autopsy reveals a violent crime. During their search for traces, Zeiler and Oberländer find close to the crime scene the 10-year-old sleepwalker Noemi Rademann (Nare Knöpfle) - barefoot and only dressed in her pajamas. Did the girl see anything and what is she afraid of? This case becomes an emotional roller coaster for Oberländer and Zeiler, who is taken aback by her own traumatic childhood memories. And as if the solving of this case isn't enough Micha has to solve his marriage problems as well. In the Lake Constance the well preserved body of a young girl is found. It was weighed down with iron chains. The corpse is identified as Marie Häusler (Tamara Röske), a girl with Trisomy 21 who disappeared 15 years ago shortly before her 18th birthday without leaving a trace. During the autopsy, coroner Thomas Egger (Stefan Pohl) is mysteriously attacked and the iron chains are stolen. Because of this Zeiler and Oberländer think, that the murder has to be a local. They investigate the family Häusler but everything seems to be normal. On the isolated gallows island the dead body of Johannes Leitner (Christian Kuchenbuch) is found. Beside him lies the unconscious Hannah Zeiler. The bullet, that killed Leitner, has been fired from Zeiler‘s gun. She tells her colleague Micha Oberländer that she followed the victim, whom she suspected to know something about her father’s destiny, to the island and was brutally knocked out. The evidence leaves it open if the death of Leitner was murder or suicide—for Oberländer it is murder, for Zeiler’s former mentor Ernst Gschwendner (August Schmölzer) it is suicide. Although Zeiler is shut out of the investigations because of her personal involvement, she – with the help of Oberländer and Komlatschek—is determined to find the truth. But some details of the cause of death don't resemble to the pattern of the other homicides. Hannah Zeiler und Micha Oberländer have to asked themselves if this is possibly the crime of a copycat. Shortly after the death of Jutta Reike a swimmer is run over by a motorboat on the lake. Sybille Baumgartner, wife of a famous local vintner, was found stabbed to death in shallow water wearing a costume rubber mermaid tail. She was a member of a local kitesurfing club. Meanwhile, Matteo, another member of the club, is shown leaving the scene of the crime stabbed with a knife still embedded in his abdomen. Treasure hunter and diver Florian Friedrichs, his girlfriend Stephanie, and assistant Manuel Mohr recover a fabulous hoard of 17th century gold coins from the bottom of Lake Constance. The coins are the legendary 'Pestilence Pennies' which the Bregenz townspeople had paid in 1630 to a local witch in hopes of ending a recurrence of the plague. A few days later, however, Friedrichs is found murdered with a gold coin in his mouth and his lips sewn together. Detectives Zeiler and Oberländer soon find that Friedrichs had made many enemies well before the treasure find. And the treasure was supposed to be cursed by the witch. Could the curse be coming true? Matters are not helped by Oberländer's abrasive behavior towards his colleagues, caused by the events of episode 9.

In the vicinity of the Blutritt with over 3000 horses, Marlene Stöhr is shot by a crossbow. Marlene survived the attack, but is put into an artificial coma. Marlene's son Oliver returned to Lake Constance a few days ago. He had tried to evade the accusations of his family, who blame him for the death of his godmother a year ago. His godmother had died in a fire at the stud farm together with a valuable breeding stallion, whom Marlene believed to have seen alive shortly before her death. Oberländer and Zeiler gradually get to the bottom of the mystery of the allegedly burnt horse, Oliver's humble origins and the conditions in the rich stud world in which his mother Marlene worked for his godmother. You want to convince yourself that it is really haunted. But instead of encountering ghosts, they witness the fight between Jakob Stocking and the building contractor Ingo Hauer, in which the latter is killed by a knife. Completely distraught, the young Lisa Schwegelin appears in the presidium and reports on a murder at the annual ghost dance in Bregenz, and she can give a detailed description of the victim. But something doesn't work. The move has not yet taken place and a dead person with stab wounds has not been reported to the police. Micha Oberländer thinks Lisa's story is nonsense. Hannah Zeiler, on the other hand, does not let go of the young woman with the vision. Only a few hours later, Hubert Droste, the man from Lisa's vision, is dead – stabbed, exactly as Lisa described it. For Oberländer, this makes Lisa a suspect, but Zeiler has her doubts. Early in the morning, forestry worker Oliver Schlösser finds Hoppe's body, impaled by one of the stakes of his historic wolf trap. The innkeeper Melanie Bodenbach, in whose guesthouse Hoppe spent the night, claims to have known nothing about his forbidden hunt for the wolf. Melanie's son Timmy behaves strangely, as the detectives catch him running away with the dead man's laptop. Timmy's grandmother Ruth Lamprecht, owner of the forest where the murder took place, also puzzles the investigators. Although the wolf repeatedly tears lambs from her flock of sheep, she speaks out strictly against the shooting of the animal. Since Hanna Zeiler has not yet returned from her motorcycle vacation, Micha Oberländer has to deal with the Austrian department inspector Luisa Hoffmann. At the same time, he has to penetrate the intimate web of a seemingly conventional family. The lifeless body of a man is found in the forest near Lake Constance and poses a dark mystery to the duo. In the victim's makeshift shelter, photos of the family of Professor Lambeck, head of the psychiatric clinic on Lake Constance, are found, in which the eyes of each family member were gouged out. When the deaf girl Theresa "Trischa" Neubauer, who seems to have watched the investigators in the forest, can no longer be found, the circle of suspects is further expanded. Neither Lambeck himself nor his wife Susan Lambeck, her daughter or her boyfriend, claim to have known the victim. But why had the man photographed the family?
