The lawyer Vincenzo Malinconico, a modest civil lawyer with a complicated love life, is appointed ex officio to take on the defense of Domenico Fantasia aka Mimmo 'o Burzone. Malinconico accompagna in questura il suo vicino di casa, Giustino Talento, preoccupato per la scomparsa della giovane moglie ucraina Lulla. Un taglio sulla mano di Giustino, però, insospettisce il commissario. La polizia perquisisce l'appartamento della coppia rilevando delle macchie di sangue e dispone il fermo di Giustino, che continua a proclamarsi innocente. Malinconico inizia a scavare nell'ambiente frequentato dalla donna e, grazie anche ai contatti del figlio Alf, che sta girando una serie di documentari sui bassifondi di Napoli, appunta i propri sospetti su Ante, il fratello della donna al quale lei consegnava del denaro sottratto a Giustino e fa scarcerare quest'ultimo. In court, Malinconico meets the engineer Romolo Sesti Orfeo, the father of a young man killed by the Camorra, who confides to him that he has set out on the trail of his son's murderer. Meanwhile, during a tough confrontation with Melancholy, Burzone realizes that he has unwittingly provoked Brooke's murder. Vincenzo also discovers that Dylan had gotten into trouble with illegal betting.
