In Game One of the 1987 World Series, St. Louis struck first with a run in the second, but Frank Viola was virtually un-hittable the rest of the way, holding the Cardinals to just four hits and no runs the rest of the way. Meanwhile, Minnesota erupted for seven runs in the fourth, keyed by Dan Gladden's grand slam, en route to a 10-1 victory.

In Game Two of the 1987 World Series, Bert Blyleven scattered six hits across seven innings of work, striking out eight and allowing just two runs. Meanwhile, the Minnesota offense once again struck big, blasting St. Louis' Danny Cox for seven runs -- six in the fourth inning alone. Tim Laudner drove in three runs: a two-RBI single in the fourth and a solo HR in the sixth.
In Game Three of the 1987 World Series, Minnesota got an unexpected boost with six shutout innings from Les Straker, and held a 1-0 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh. But rather

In Game Three of the 1987 World Series, Minnesota got an unexpected boost with six shutout innings from Les Straker, and held a 1-0 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh. But rather than ride Straker for another inning they went to the bullpen, Juan Berenguer was torched for three runs in 1/3 of an inning, and the Cardinals won 3-1.

In Game Four of the 1987 World Series, the Cardinals roughed up Frank Viola in his second start of the series, as the lefty surrendered five runs in 3-1/3 innings. The game is perhaps best remembered for Tom Lawless' three-run HR in the fourth inning (and subsequent bat flip) -- one of just two home runs in Lawless' major league career -- but also features the series' lone appearance of 43-year old Joe Niekro in relief of Viola.
In Game Five of the 1987 World Series, Bert Blyleven and Danny Cox reprised their pitching matchup from Game Two, and dueled through five scoreless innings. In the sixth, St. Louis broke

In Game Five of the 1987 World Series, Bert Blyleven and Danny Cox reprised their pitching matchup from Game Two, and dueled through five scoreless innings. In the sixth, St. Louis broke through for three runs, aided by a rare error by Greg Gagne. Though the Twins rallied with two runs in the eighth -- on a two-run triple by Gary Gaetti -- the Cards' sixth inning outburst was enough for the win and a 3-2 series lead.
In Game Six of the 1987 World Series, the Cardinals jumped on Twins' starter Les Straker early and with a 3-2 series lead, Minnesota's season was on the ropes. Don Baylor tied the game

In Game Six of the 1987 World Series, the Cardinals jumped on Twins' starter Les Straker early and with a 3-2 series lead, Minnesota's season was on the ropes. Don Baylor tied the game with a two-run homer in the fifth, and Steve Lombardozzi followed with an RBI single to give the Twins a 6-5 lead. In the next inning, Kent Hrbek put the game out of reach with a grand slam homerun, and the Twins forced a decisive Game Seven with an 11-5 win.

The 1987 World Series between the Twins and Cardinals brought a whole new meaning to the term "home-field advantage." It marked the first time that the home team won all of its games in a series. It was also the first time that World Series games were played indoors, at Minnesota's Metrodome. Inside were deafening crowds of more than 55,000 screaming fans. The "Homer Hanky" joined the baseball lexicon, as Twins fans waved them with frenzy.
St. Louis Cardinals 2, Minnesota Twins 4.
