The Big Bang has long been considered the beginning of space, matter and time from absolute nothingness. Recent research is now calling this theory into question: What happened before the so-called Big Bang? Did the calendar start with the Big Bang? Or did time already exist before then? In trying to explain the beginning of the universe, researchers are reaching the limits of physics as we know it and entering the world of quantum theory. Quantum theory is the theoretical basis that explains the nature and behavior of energy and matter at the subatomic level.
