Gomer comes to the courthouse one day and announces that he has decided to join the Marines. He believes this is a test to see if he has what it takes to be a man. Because of his naivete, Gomer at first does not fair well. After Andy has a little talk with the Drill Instructor, he leaves him with the impression that Gomer is related to a prominent Marine General. The DI takes Gomer under his wing and gets him in shape.

This was the first show in a 2 year run for Jim Nabors following the end of his highly popular Gomer Pyle USMC. Mr. Nabors brought Ronnie Schnell and Frank Sutton from Gomer Pyle to help star in this variety series. In this initial offering his guests were Andy Griffith, Julie Budd, and a very brief appearance by Don Knotts. Mr. Nabors essays several songs, among them Green Green Grass of Home and The Impossible Dream. He also appeared in a couple of comedy skits that were passable. All in all a decent debut and one that would please his middle American fans.
