The F-4 Phantom fighter-bomber was originally developed for the U.S. Navy in 1960, and later adopted by both the U.S. Marines and the U.S. Air Force. The F-15 Eagle is a twin-engine, all-weather tactical fighter designed to gain and maintain air superiority in aerial combat. The Lockheed F-117A Night Hawk was the first stealth bomber and was instrumental in the 1991 Persian Gulf War, as discussed in this third volume of Famous Planes: Superplanes. The F-117 is a single-seat, twin-engine stealth ground attack aircraft formerly operated by the U.S. Air Force. The Harrier was developed as a close support and reconnaissance fighter aircraft, with vertical and short takeoff & landing capabilities, giving it the nickname "Harrier Jump Jet". The F-14 Tomcat is a supersonic, variable-sweep wing fighter aircraft that was developed for the U.S. Navy.
