1944, im letzten Kriegssommer, macht sich der Wehrmachtsoldat Walter Proska aus Lyck in Masuren auf den Weg vom Heimaturlaub zurück an die Ostfront. Im Zug begegnet er der jungen Polin Wanda, die im Waggon eine Bombe deponiert. Proska kann die Sprengladung beseitigen, doch wenig später fährt der Zug auf eine von Partisanen gelegte Mine und explodiert.
