Buoyed by a wonderful cast and a steady feeling of narrative ascent, this sweet slice of life hidden inside a show about Shogi proves that sometimes the riskiest moves are the ones most worth taking. Vinland Saga is a phenomenal piece of Viking fiction - packed in equal measure with kinetic violence and beautiful humanity. Over its fifteen years in publication, mangaka Makoto Yukimura has given us one of the medium's best works - one that has truly earned the saga of its title.
