De Smaakpolitie

Benny Bax meets the friendly owners of a vegan restaurant. He also pops into a small, cosy kitchen-diner. And in an Oriental establishment, the inspector comes across an altar with offerings to Buddha. And they've apparently been there for a while! Finally, “The Taste Police” goes on a pub crawl. There are wild rumours about the snacks that many pubs serve with a pint. They are said to often contain traces of urine. Benny has the laboratory investigate whether these stories are true. And the results leave little to the imagination!

On Monday 30 April, Benny Bax goes on an investigation for “De Smaakpolitie” in Meetjesland. No catering establishment is safe from the hygienist, so the kitchens can expect a thorough inspection. Who will get a sticker this week? Perhaps the local eel restaurant or a gigantic sports centre where Benny finds himself on thin ice. The view from another restaurant makes him shudder. But is his fear justified?

Antwerp is a vibrant student city. And students don't just drink. They get hungry too. But can they prepare their food in hygienic conditions? This week, “De Smaakpolitie” investigates Antwerp's student kitchens. Benny goes from student flat to student flat to see how today's youth deal with hygiene. And that turns out to be a big disappointment: it becomes a real horror tour for the inspector.

Benny Bax visits Benidorm, the sunny seaside resort on Spain's Costa Blanca, where thousands of Flemish people spend the winter enjoying “the good life”. And part of that good life is, of course, good food, preferably Flemish fare. But is that possible here on Spanish soil, without compromising food safety?

But are the kitchens here as clean as the city itself? “De Smaakpolitie” has a new mission: to thoroughly investigate the catering industry in the tourist centre of the city. “De Smaakpolitie” finds itself in centuries-old buildings, often with tiny kitchens. And those are, of course, difficult to keep clean.
